I understand regret now...

Recommended Posts

I have been on this board for several weeks. I have seen several posts about regret and I didnt really understand it. I struggled to get approval and pushed so hard to get the surgery that I didnt understand how you can regret this life saving surgery. Right after the surgery I didnt understand it. Other than thirst, i felt fine.

Day 2 was good as well. A little achy but I thought i was going to sail through it.

Day three had profound nausea, which almost kept me in the hospital another day. It took three different types of anti nausea meds to get it under control.

Day four and i felt like someone was pressing on my chest every time i had more than 2 sips. It feels like there is something stuck in my throat. I was only able to get 16 oz down. I ended up calling the on call surgeon to make sure that i was ok.

Day five and i am still thirsty. I cant get enough liquid down to stop the dry mouth. The pressure is so painful. Ive tried many different items trying to find something my stomach can handle.

We stopped by mcdonalds for food for my husband. I ordered vanila ice cream, i just wanted something soothing that would slip past the knot in my throat. I took two bites... and i hated it. It tasted disgusting. But that didnt stop me from crying. Something i shouldnt even want and didnt even need was no longer an option and i was unreasonably upset.

I understand regret now. All of these issues combining undermine the descision you made.

Do i regret it? Now, yes. Tomorrow, no. I know i can get through it but for all of my research i didnt know how really hard it would be.

Try drinking something other than Water. I CAN'T drink water! I drink Propel water. I've also been fine with Gatorade G2, Powerade Zero, Vitamin water zero and something else that I don't recall that was sugar free. I have the exact same symptoms at 6 weeks out when I attempt water.

Oh gosh I'm so sorry and I SO understand! I was so miserable for a solid 18 days postop, which included an ambulance ride to the ER because of dehydration... yes I get it. I researched this surgery for a year. I read a stack of books about it. I got on this website and soaked up all I could. Surgery came and all I could think was, "Oh no, what have I done to myself".

@@QueenOfTheTamazons, your body knows what to do. Let it do it it's own way. Be patient. You WILL feel better. And then you will be wonderfully thankful for the powerful tool that is yours to use for your good.

You are going to be ok and you won't regret it once you feel better.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
