Boom knowledge bomb dropped. That's where my 2 years of sleeve sleeve sleeve got turned upside down. I went to this particular kaiser 75 some miles away cause everyone says they're the best and he tells me roux en y. My only hesitation now is my very strong wife who wants me to get the sleeve cause she thinks my skin will be sag more with rny and I won't be able to eat the 4 Oz with her that I could with sleeve. After reading comments from over 10 or so people on here I am feeling comfortable about the rny. I can't wait for me to get the call for the surgery date and I can join many of the great people on here in sharing my story and uploading some pictues.

As someone who has had both VSG and RNY, I can tell you from my experience, your capacity will be about the same with either surgery. Prior to my revision, I could eat about 4-4.5 oz of dense Protein (I was 2 years post surgery). I'm now 3 months post conversion to RNY and I can eat between 2.5 and 3 oz of dense Protein. You should not base your decision on what your capacity is or how much loose skin you may end up with (and there shouldn't be that much difference in the skin dept. between the two surgeries. You may lose slightly faster with RNY, but at the two year mark, the loss is comparable. If you're going to have loose skin, you're going to have loose skin.)

As someone who dealt with severe GERD/Reflux after my VSG (but not before) I would NEVER pick VSG if I had a history of heartburn, GERD, reflux or whatever you want to call it. I spent a year of my life, coughing up acid, sleeping sitting up, restricting certain foods and generally being miserable. So, knowing now what I know, if I were in your shoes, I would select RNY

What I don't understand is WHY my doctor never mentioned this when I have a history of acid reflux- although it was completely controlled on Prilosec. I'm suffering unmercifully now with heartburn and I get no control or relief. Brings me to tears every day and I'm only 5 weeks post? He tells me the surgery-one or the other- makes no difference? I had a few complications and a hernia repair too- and I will never do another surgery. Am I going to never find relief?

Omg that sounds horrible. My surgeon said if he does the sleeve on me he will have to eventually go back in and do the rny because he was pretty sure I would be suffering horribly. You should keep bugging your doctor about how bad you feel as my old boss use to say " the squeaky wheel gets the oil "

I'm sorry that your Dr. never told you that VSG may make reflux/GERD worse. Before my surgery, my surgeon questioned me extensively about whether I suffered from GERD. If I had, he likely would not have approved me for a sleeve. I can't say if your reflux will get better with time. I can only tell you that mine did not. It began 8 months after my initial surgery and I revised at the 2 year 2 month mark. In between I tried every medication combination possible, omeprazole, protonix, dexilant, zantac. Nothing worked Revision to RNY was the only thing that cured my GERD. I'm 3 months post revision and haven't had any problems with acid since I woke up from surgery. In my opinion, your surgeon was incorrect. VSG has a history of making reflux/GERD worse, however, since you've had surgery, that point is irrelevant now. I wish you luck and hope you find some relief.

I just wish I would have heard this before. I asked him and he told me that either surgery aggravates the GURD.... but this is way more then aggravation:-(

In my opinion this is not true. RNY is used to relieve, if not flat out stop reflux/GERD

I take omeprazole and a pepsid daily- I'm only 5 weeks. I'm told to give it time. I had no delay in the heartburn it started as soon as I woke from surgery! I'm also told I'm still healing and I may still be highly sensitive. Pre surgery omeprazole completely relieved all my symptoms so I'm hoping. This experience has been terrible and another surgery is not an option- at least as I feel now:-(

omeprazole did absolutely nothing for me. You might see if your doctor can give you one of the other PPIs (protonix or dexilant) and see if you get more relief.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
