when do the pounds start coming off?

Recommended Posts

I am 5 days post op. I have read that the hospital can put Water weight on you and you shouldn't look at the scale till a week past surgery.

I am just curious as to when you all started seeing scale move in the right direction. My weight on surgery day was 219 and 5 days post op I am 218. When will the weight loss kick in?

I held onto my Water weight (from IV, diet changes... Etc.) for 10 days. I do have a history of edema though.

It really is different for everyone. I am 3.5 mths out and really don't remember when I saw the scale move down even though I weigh everyday. I just don't worry about it much.

Two days after surgery I was down two pounds, but now on day 12 I have been the same weight for two days. I think everyone is different and we can't really compare. You will lose, it just may take a few extra days to get rid of the extra fluids you got while you were in the hospital.

I also think it depends on your pre-op diet. I think people who have a strict liquid diet before surgery have already had their bodies adjust a little more than people who's bodies are shocked when suddenly they aren't eating. Haha

When do the pounds start coming off ?

Hopefully in your pre-op days.

Roll into the surgery with good loss momentum.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
