3 days post op, scared to drink too much

Recommended Posts

I had my RNY and Wednesday and feel pretty good today, but I'm nervous about drinking and what will happen if I drink too much at a time/too many sips in a row..

Does anyone know how big a sip should be? I'm on Clear liquids until Monday and am supposed to drink 4 oz in one hour...but can I drink an once at a time or do I have to spread that out over 15 minute? I feel like I'm going to have to constantly sip Water all day and probably still never get 64 oz.

Right after surgery your body is in a major heal mode. Many patients find it difficult to meet their daily Fluid and Protein requirements during the first couple weeks. Just keep trying and you should be able to get there. Fluids pass through your stomach. They have a separate pathway than food. So don't worry about drinking too much at one time. The important thing is to try and meet your minimum Fluid requirements.

As your fat cells break down, they release many chemicals and hormones into your body. These are flushed through your system into your kidneys and expelled in your urine. It take fluids to make this process work correctly. Avoid dehydration.

as James said, liquids pass right through. But just remember to sip, not chug (you'll be able to drink normally when you're out a few weeks). I was always afraid I was drinking too fast, but my dietitian said my pouch would let me know if that was the case. But do just sip - you're probably worrying too much about the timing. You'll be OK if you just sip sip sip all day...

I had the same concerns because Water is so bland. The second day at the hospital they gave me crystal light with some flavor and I was fine after that. Get something you like to drink(sugar free) and you should be fine.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
