Is the sleeve really "just as good"

Recommended Posts

Fair enough, However, the lap band has been horrible for me I have had it 4 years and have had nothing but complications which has hindered my results. I would never have another surgery if it was anything like the band and I'm sure other Banders with complications would agree on that. That's why It's Important to me to research and become educated on the surgery I choose to have because the band was a tool and it failed I have never been able to eat chicken or turkey veges and have them stay down or even Protein shakes after several adjustment and $$$$ i never had a sweet spot due to continously throwing up my band had slipped defeating the purpose of having it and I again have a hernia, Thats why the tool matters to me. I understand for some they have had great results and no problems with the band that's wonderful ;)

Same Boat! I've had my band for 4 years and am getting the sleeve in 1.5 weeks. So afraid of failing, but excited to use my new tool and make better decisions. I agree that a support group is what I need this time around!

I'm interested to follow this. I'm beginning the process to revise from my band. My surgeon said I could do either, but in his experience RNY was safer post band. He explained on a model of a stomach where the band sits and how the staple line for the sleeve goes directly through where the band was and said that makes it more likely to leak. He showed where the cuts are made for the RNY and how they are below the part affected by the band.

Also, I didn't know this until my support group meeting just this week, but the hunger part that is cut away with the sleeve does grow back eventually. Crazy, huh?

I was hoping for the sleeve because it seemed less involved, but I trust my surgeon completely so if he recommends RNY, RNY it is for me.

That's, why I weighing out the options I have read many people that have the revision from band to sleeve have had mostly complications due leaks so they end up having the bypass to correct it. So I was thinking maybe the bypass would be best...

I had the band. Hated it! Vomiting all the time. Had it removed a year ago and just got the sleeve. I love it! It feels so much better. No sickness at all no vomiting. I can tell when to stop eating. With the band my first bite always made me vomit. I'm 2 weeks post op and down a total of 24 lbs. I'm feeling great and very optimistic. I wish you great success which ever choice you make. ????

it's so reassuring to hear that other band-to-sleevers have the same fears i do.

Hi all! I had rny because I had an existing issue with GERD. I could burp and acid would come out of my nose. Not pleasant. Sleeve can make GERD worse, or create it in people who never had the issue, so my surgeon advised rny. I walked in wanting the less invasive sleeve. It seems like a less permanent alteration since your intestines aren't re-routed. People seem to not have as many food in tolerances and they don't dump typically. However I will say this...Everyone is different. I have been blessed with no complications so far. I have a sleeved family member who recently had an issue, and a sleeved co-worker who has been in and out of hospital because she can't keep any food down. Some of this may be bad choices. Because they don't dump they could be maybe less cautious with their choices? Only they know for sure. I'm happy with my pouch, but many sleeves are thrilled and extremely successful. Let your situation make the decision. If your surgeon is trying to talk you out of rny, find out his real reason. It'd not about what everyone else is choosing, it's about what will be the best choice for you.

Just my experience.. I had the band with its ups and downs for 9 years. I lost little, gained it all back. Had constant issues with denser foods so I always turned to sliders. Bad choices and poor nutrition became the norm because of a very stressful job and long hours. I was sleeved in November and so far my biggest regret is that I chose the band over the sleeve the first time. I'm 5 weeks post op, down 35 pounds and able to eat denser Proteins in small portions with no issue at all. I believe this was the right choice for me and I will be successful this time.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
