Dr. Does not stand by choice

Recommended Posts

My doctor just tried to talk me out of doing the surgery. She says I should do it after having kids. She says I won't be able to feed my baby enough and that I will have nutritional problems. I need some support and advice.

Your Primary Dr or Surgeon? Honestly- this is your choice. Many can't get pregnant without improved fertility with weight loss. A pregnancy when obese can be dangerous and high risk.

I want them now but can't till I'm don't with school which will be in 4 years. And yes, I feel like I'm not even gonna get pregnant like this.i haven't had my period for 6 months. It's because I'm so overweight that I've stoped. :( it's like......she didn't make sense. I think I'm way worse off being morbidly obese than being healthy and not able to gorge myself to death. It was my doctor not my surgeon

Sorry im.all over the place and not making sense with this response. I've had a bad day. I think that she was just trying to sell me a $200/month diet plan and my feelings are hurt.

Many women have normal pregnancies after wls. It is advised not to become pregnant until 18 months after having surgery.

If you are waiting until 4yrs anyway, wls wont hurt the baby and will be better than you being high risk from weight and fertility gets better.

I agree with the ladies- plenty of women have healthy babies and pregnancies and also nurse their babies. That is one of the reasons I'm doing surgery is to *hopefully* be able to get pregnant. Best of luck to you!

I was a Labor and Delivery RN for 15 years and had many patients with WLS! The pregnancy will be easier and safer for you and baby once the weight is off! You will have to be careful with your diet during pregnancy to make sure you get enough nutrition, but it will still be better than if you are very overweight. You will also be better able to chase after that little one when you are healthy! Start looking for a supportive doctor! Good luck!

Thanks. I see a PA and about 20 minutes before my appointment with her she had a family emergency and the DR had to step in and see me instead. I should have just rescheduled. My PA is very supportive and has always worked hard for my health. I just don't think this DR knows me and my medical history well enough to try to sway me from my choice.

And again, thank you for all the wisdom and support. I'm scared that I won't be able to conceive because of my weight too. I mean I'm not even menstruating anymore. :( and I'm looking forward to being able to nurse and run after my own baby.

A surgeon and his team would be able to give you guidelines about pregnancy too. My rules were no getting pregnant for two years post op. More than enough time to heal and be able to nutritionally support a developing life. Every doctor is different, of course, but most will say that this surgery increases your chances of having a healthy, uncomplicated pregnancy.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
