pre op question doctor required EGD?

Recommended Posts

I am getting closer to surgery date and I am tring to do all of the pre op stuff. I was wondering if other doctors are requiring a pre op EGD(stomach scope). My doctor said it was to check for hiatal hernias or ulcers. Everything else going smoothly just scared that insurance will deny me.

Hi newmel - I didn't have to have the scope, but I did have to do a barium swallow upper GI xray. I have talked to quite a few pre-banders though who did have to do the scope. I imagine it depends on the Dr, or maybe something in your medical history. For instance, my Dr sent me to a vascular specialist based on the fact that my sister developed a clot once. I'd rather that the surgeon know EVERYTHING he can before the surgery.....I'd hate to wake up after surgery only to be told they couldn't do it because of something they found!!

I'm waiting for insurance approval too. Hang in there!!!

It depends on the doctor whether they will require this. Some do, some don't.

I did. It wasn't a big deal. They knocked me out and it lasted about 10 minutes. I'm glad they did it - turns out I had the start of 2 little ulcers and we got that taken care of.

The bad part was my insurance has a $500 co-pay on "in-patient services" and I didn't know about that until after ... errrr!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
