Benefits of Post-Op Surgeon Visits Beyond 1 Yr?

Recommended Posts

I am nearly 1 year out from surgery, am happy with the progress that I'm making, and have stuck with each of my post-op surgeon visits since I had my surgery last November. Although I intend to go to my 1-yr post-op appointment, I am really beginning to question the value of continuing these appointments. I have not seen my surgeon since before my surgery, appointments have always with a PA or nurse practitioner. Because of problems with lab work being sent to an out of network lab, my post-op labs have all been done with my primary care physician since. The feedback on blood work from the nurse at the surgeon's office has been wrong on 2 separate occasions (ie; misreading lab results). My surgeon does not have an in-house dietitian, so I consult with a dietitian separately.

For those who have been successful long-term, is there a benefit to long-term follow-ups with your surgeon's office that I am missing that should push me to continue visits with the surgeon's office rather than just continue follow-ups through my family doctor and dietitian?

I've been seeing my family doctor every 6 months and just had my 2nd year blood work done. All good to go I did stop after my 1 year mark seeing the surgeon. Maybe it's wrong? But my 2nd insurance doesn't pick up payment for him.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
