What did your first week on purees look like?

Recommended Posts

Advanced to the purée stage yesterday and I'm skittish about trying too much, too soon. Yesterday I had an ounce of refried Beans and a tablespoon of squash purée and I couldn't finish it. I'm thinking of trying one meal a day with purees but was curious how the vets out there proceeded. I've been lucky so far with no issues rating/drinking and the fear of any starting is hindering me, I think.

about three times a day I would have a small amount of something pureed - starting with an ounce at a time and by the end of my puree phase (2 weeks) I could have 2 ounces most of the time. I continued to supplement with Protein shakes in order to meet my Protein goals.

Items I had during puree:

dannon light and fit greek yogurt - make sure you get ones that don't have any bits/chunks of fruit in it, some flavors do, some don't. the vanilla, key lime and lemon are pretty safe choices for no chunks.

tuna (One of the flavored pouches) pureed with a tablespoon of plain nonfat greek yogurt - i would get two meals out of this.

pouches of salmon or canned chicken done the same way.

I did refried Beans as well for something warm - although my dietician said that wasn't a great choice (not a bad one either) because the protein content really isn't that great.

and towards the end of my puree phase I made the infamous ricotta bake from eggface's blog. I also had a very soft scrambled egg towards the end of puree phase - some people don't tolerate eggs early out though.

The first thing I ate was a scrambled egg. My first week I did greek yogurts, finely chopped chicken with light mayo, homemade black Beans, Ricotta bake, egg salad, baked sweet potato. My sleeve has tolerated everything very well. (I am eating very small portions, no more than 1-2 oz at a time)

Thanks! I sprinkled some Protein powder on my Beans but not much - I'm quite sick of everything tasting like whey. Fortunately I've been able to have Greek yogurt since day 5, and I'll continue with those. Can't wait to have eggs!

I did low fat cottage cheese, ricotta bake, mashed potatoes with unflavored Protein Powder, things like that about an ounce at a time or less depending on how I felt. I would try to eat three times a day but wasn't always able to do so.

The exact recipe is on the world according to egg face blog but you basically mix ricotta with Italian seasonings of your liking, egg, a bit of Parmesan and mozzarella and top it with some marina then you bake it till its gooey and bubbly. It is very good.

I hear ya on the eggs! I had my post-op follow-up appointment with the dietician and NP this morning and we were charting my course for the next several weeks. I can try scrambled eggs on October 27. I'm looking forward to that!!

What do you mean convert from sleeve to bypass

It means that they had the sleeve, then some years later they had the RNY gastric bypass done. It is usually done because some sleeve patients get severe heartburn . This can be a side effect of the sleeve, for some.

Both the scrambled egg and ricotta bake (which includes egg) made me sick. I am 19 days out and had 2 shakes, refried Beans with cheese/sour cream, and a string cheese. It's only about 600 calories. My target range is 800-1000 but idk how I'd get anymore in.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
