Has anyone ever tried OA meetings? I am thinking about trying them to learn how to control or manage my poor eating habits before I get banded. Anyone familiar?:bounce:

Yes, I attended O.A. meetings for many years. They are great for letting you "get to the root" of your emotions that control your eating behaviours... It is a spiritual program rather than a count the calories program... they don't focus on food... rather your relationship with YOURSELF and others.

They use the 12 steps and 12 traditions of A.A. as their foundation. It is a comprable program. Inexpensive, but sometimes it is hard to find a good meeting location. As they are not available everywhere.

Also sometimes you get into a negative bunch who are NOT obstaining from compulsive overeating and just think they are working the steps.

Try it out, it may be just the thing you need. Go in with an open mind.

Thanks for the info...I think I will try it out. I am familiar with the 12 steps since I am a drug and alcohol counselor but with AA or NA abstinence is the answer but with food it's different??????

HI KAT:

You admit that you are addicted to Food , I am powerless over food..... but instead of sobriety it is called Abstinance.

You essentially OBSTAIN from Compulsive Overeating... but different people could 'define' that term differently...

for me it meant 3 meals a day, nothing in between, one day at a time.. No sugar, no White flour... that's what my "abstinance" consisted of.

So I guess it's about idenifying trigger foods and then abstaining from them as well as only eating at designatied times rather than eating when we want to? What about portions? Do they teach you how to tell when you are full and when to stop?

they don't stipulate portions, but i used 4 oz. protien, 1/2 cup veg, 1/2 cup fruit, 1/2 cup whole grain/starch + 2 milk serv /day

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
