The Losing Battle

Recommended Posts

After a few years I'm back on here after being at what seems like my wits end. I had the surgery in October of 2013 and had gotten myself down to 279 (90 pounds lost). Since getting a new boss last year, planning a wedding, and getting married I have gotten back up to 310.

I know the reasons why. I started eating Snacks after dinner again, drinking a lot more wine, and eating full plates of food. I cannot eat full plates in one sitting. I can take two bites and then am stuffed. Now, however, I wait it out until those two bites go down and eat two more, then two more, and so on.

I need help. Advice. Anything. Stress eating help?

I exercise 30 min/3x per week (cardio).

I see a brand new lap band doctor on Thursday as my old surgeon moved out of state. Interested to see what he says....

If you do an online search for 'stress eating' or 'emotional eating,' you'll get countless links.

Two things you might try:

shrinkyourself.com

(Book) THE BECK DIET SOLUTION, Judith Beck, PhD. She has a later book with a similar title that includes an actual food plan not geared toward WLS people; that's not the one I'm talking about. The first book is about eating to lose weight while dealing with emotions and making decisions. It's best to start from page 1 rather than hopping around. Do the exercises, including writing out the cards.

Deffanatly get your band checked there have been many bad side affects from it and many revisions to the sleeve or rny due to weight gain and your body not tolerating it. The only able to take 2 bites at a time sounds like that. I am currently going for a revision to rny cause I have gained back all my weight and now have GERD from the band. I have an intolerance to the band as well regular PBing no fun. Good luck and msg me if you have any questions.

Hello, I am also going for a revision to the gastric bypass. I'm hoping to have it done by end of the year. How is it going for you?

It's going good I have my "new patient" apt for the rny on the 18th and will go from there. Doing ugh better since a slight unfill and starting meds for the GERD.

While some posters are recommending revisions, I'd say that your issues are emotional rather than the band not working. You've learned how to eat around it and that's the problem. Talk to the doctor, be honest with him or her, and see what he/she says about fills vs. a mind reset so to speak. It might behoove you to consider working with a therapist. I do. She had been banded at one time and understands better than most, how to help me to navigate the world of successful WLS and more importantly, how to maintain that success. Good luck and keep us posted.

Looking back I wish I had gotten the sleeve, but at the time it was a relatively new procedure. I am going to talk to my new doctor tomorrow about what has been going on. I am, however, concerned about the cost of the sleeve. When I had the band I had regular Cigna insurance. Now my work has switched over to HSA. Last time I paid $200 for a 10,000 surgery. I can't afford to put in $2000 this time to reach my deductible,,,,, :(

Saw the new doctor today. He seemed to really push for revision and the bypass. Of all the surgeries I would never get the bypass because I have seen too many friends/family fail with it.

He did also recommend trying behavioral health and seeing a nutritionist again. He also put me on the bariatric 3 diet. Basically the same diet you do right after surgery with liquids and mushy foods. This is going to suck, lol

I was banded Sep 2013. Nov 2015 I got to my 'lowest' weight, losing about 55lbs. Not great, not where I wanted to be, but was still on the right path. Holidays hit and everything has gone down hill. I am currently up 25-30 lbs from my low, and last week I started having issues that the doc says is a slipped band. All Fluid has been removed, however none of the symptoms have gone away yet, he did say it would take a week or two. Current insurance will no longer cover any bariactrics, although we do change in Jan. I want to remove the band and have the sleeve done, but we will see how things go. Right now I feel so lost, discouraged and alone. Feel like I will never win the battle of having a healthy body, so I should just give up. I could really use some help from someone that understands.

Julie I think you are right ... The revision talk is all I see ... I lost 40 lbs and creeped 20 back since 2008. I'm currently getting mild gerd symptoms .. But it's because I am eating around the band and not excising like I should be. I wonder if the band has slipped. But I can't go through another surgery.

Back away and.dont go back.. i dont like feeling like a stuffed pig after i eat. The other day i fit in a whole pot pie, and they are kinda small. I did the same thing you did, and i felt like shit... i had to go lay down til the feeling of uncomfort left, then i felt guilty about the high calories so i went to the gym? You have the tool (a smaller stomach) stop stretching it out! Yea reward yourself once in a while, but when you do, be willing to do the work and trade taste for calorie burning. You can do this. Just tell yourself back away

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
