Ladies : Did any of had your period during surgery?

Recommended Posts

Hi ladies,

This is kind of a weird topic but my surgery is scheduled for 10/27/16 and I just got my period a couple of days ago so if I'm as regular as I've always been I'm scheduled to get my period the same day of surgery. Were any of you on your period or got your period while in surgery or in the hospital? How was it handled, what did the doctor or nurses tell you? I'm going to be so uncomfortable I want to cry! Any suggestions for me? Many thanks in advanced!

I got my period the day of surgery, I told the nurses in preop and they gave me underwear and a pad to put on. I got a catheter so it was a little awkward and uncomfortable after I woke up. But all the nurses where so nice and supportive, telling me it's actually pretty common, even people who weren't due for it will get it with the stress of the surgery. Don't worry, you'll be fine and get thru it no problem!

Not weird; try harder. @@AmyD102 spelled out your first answer. As to being uncomfortable, the good news is that you'll be knocked out for a little while; you won't feel a thing.

Do you have to do the 2-week liquid pre-op diet? I'm wondering if that can throw off your system enough to stall your period

It's most unlikely that the pre-op diet affects cycle. Emotions are more likely, so if you're atwitter about surgery, you may have a change. f so, It could be sooner or later, so just let it be. Topmost is the unlikelihood that your cycle will be thrown off.

Stiff upper lip.

@@wls Thanks for pointing it out, I can read..and write too! I'm going to need to wake up sometime so that was what I was referring to... Thanks again for your input.

I had some breakthrough bleeding during the preop diet and it lasted throughout the surgery and recovery. Even almost a month out and my period is still a little messed up!

I got my period two days before hand. They told me to keep my own underwear on during surgery and that was it. No issues at all. Although my period lasted like double than normal. About 9 days.

A lot of women who are on the pill have to stop taking it a couple of weeks before surgery so this can alter your period. And what has been mentioned before pre-surgery diet and emotions can also change timing. Hospital staff are used to it, so don't worry. Best wishes in your journey.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
