What Do You Find Most Freeing About WLS?

Recommended Posts

Weight loss surgery success takes a lot of work and it’s nearly a full-time job, especially in the beginning. However, you can soon see the results of your efforts as you lose weight, gain energy, and watch the scale drop.

What do you find most freeing about WLS and weight loss? Is it getting to shop at regular-sized clothing stores? Is it feeling free to say “No, thank you” to foods that you used to feel compelled to eat? Is it being small and energetic enough to go on airplanes, to movie theaters and restaurants, and on amusement park rides with your family without giving it a second thought? Is it being able to spend less time managing your medications, doctor’s appointments, and CPAP machine? Share what you find most freeing about WLS surgery success!

What I've found most freeing about WLS is how it has improved my vision.

Yes.....vision.

I can now see how much better the future will be.

Freed me from being self-conscious. Nobody wants to walk in every room, at every party, every meeting being the "fat guy" or the most heavy.

WLS... Has been epic.... I am free to move, not be in pain, wear shorts and a bathing suit .....not just because I am thinner but because my psoriasis has cleared. That is a big one .... freer from autoimmune disease!! Free from PCOS. I am free from the hungry monster. Free from food controlling my life. Free from being self conscience about being fat. Free from being a wallflower... I could go on and on and there is no way I pick just one!

first thing that comes to mind is that I do not have to choose 1 activity on my days off -

in otherwords, if I go hiking I will not be able to get my chores done - or if I work in the garden I can not go hiking due to fatigue, body pain, etc.

now it is no problem to do multiple things a day - or to do household chores when I return home freeing up more weekend time for leisure activities.

secondly the fact that I do not have to worry if I eat this or eat that (Fruit is the main choice in this category) will my blood sugar go high - what will my A1c be - is my Metformin controlling it? is it worth taking the Metformin (side effects) - no worries because I am no longer considered a diabetic, no longer on any prescription medications. this is also a huge, freeing truth.

I feel noticed again. No longer invisible and written off from the get-go. It's not fair that people make snap judgments of the obese, but it happens all the time and at 3 months out its already less of an issue in my life.

Carrying around those eight average sized new born babies around with me everywhere I went. Yay! The mental picture is enough to remind me where I have come from and not want to go back there!

Freeing regarding to WLS or weighing less?

Regarding to WLS it's wonderful that I get to eat the things I like without having to worry about eating way too big portions of it. I can eat "normal food" without having to stop while still feeling hungry and without having to fill up on low calorie stuff that tastes awful.

Free from f ood controlling me. Free from constant hunger.

I'm two and a half years post LapBand. I get hungry at mealtimes. I eat enough and not too much. I don't think about f ood in between. It was a life changer.

Most freeing is not to be the biggest mom in the classroom any longer.

Note to self: I don't have to take this day all at once but rather one step, one breath and one moment at a time. I am only one person.

My biggest relief is that I am able to be a productive member of society.....

I can play an active role in raising my grandchildren. I can pull my own weight (pun intended) on the farm. My marriage is less strained because we are once again a team, and I am no longer concerned with being a burden on my family and health care system because of obesity related illnesses and physical limitations.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
