How long before u start loosing weight?

Recommended Posts

You are only a few days out of surgery. I was in the hospital myself for 3 days before coming home, to find out that I had gained a few pounds. From what I have read, a large majority of people were in the same boat. After surgery you were most likely being pumped full of fluids. You have just had a major surgery and your body is dealing with a lot at this point. The Fluid retention will go down soon.

I saw the first weight loss about 4 days after returning home (on top of the Water weight gained).

Around the 4th or 6th you should see a change in weight. You still is filled with gas and yes Fluid, you may not have iv fluids now but the Fluid did not just go awayvthat quick. Also you have to walk every hour. That helps a lot. I had to learn this myself after having my surgery on sep 14

I had surgery on Sept, 15 and when I came home from the hospital, I'd gained 5 pounds! However it's 2 weeks later, and since coming home I've lost 20 pounds! I am trying to keep up with the fluids, trying to get 3 Protein shakes a day, and walking. Started by doing 5 laps around the house every 2 hours, worked up to walking outside for 45min-an hour every day. I'm still dehydrated, but yesterday my surgeon and nut approved moving to "mushie" foods- and of course told me to keep sipping that fluid!

I had RNY on 9/20. When I came home, I had gained 17lbs post op in Fluid. That came off in about 4 days and then I have lost 13-14 lbs from my pre-op weight. It may take a little for your body to catch up with the surgery. It's probably why my doc strongly recommended to only get weighed at the follow up appointments after surgery initially. (I had already been weighed at the office twice due to a small post op complication).

I had my surgery on the 27th sep and haven't lost any weight as yet. Can you guys tell me how long before the numbers started dropping?

I had mine on the 26th. For the first couple days I didn't lose. However, once I went to the bathroom (and it wasn't that much) that night I showered and was down 3 lbs. Its strange and maybe the swelling inside could still be holding weight.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
