Need advice on my post op diet

Recommended Posts

Hi all

I'm due to be sleeved in 3 days and I wanted to ask everyone's opinion on my post op diet given to me by my nutritionist.

Her booklet says to go straight onto purées once I leave the hospital (from day 3). Eg of food is "half a cup of puréed meat and puréed veg or scrambled eggs".

I know we should follow our teams advice but quite frankly this scares the crap out of me. My sister is sleeved so I've seen her journey, and the amount of posts I've read here about people having trouble with just liquid, I'm not sure I should be going straight to purée.

I also haven't been given a daily Protein goal. Just 1.5 L of Water a day. (I'm Australian)

Any advice or stories from those in a similar boat very appreciated.

My surgeon goes to pureed food pretty quickly after surgery but here's the deal. IF they say you can try and and you FEEL like trying it then try it. Like one teeny, tiny bite. If you follow their advice, try it, and it makes you feel bad or comes back up call them. I am thinking if I am having trouble getting Water down I am not going to be in any hurry to try to get food down ya know?

I don't know what to say about no Protein goal except if it were me I would research how much people are usually recommended to have at each stage and try to get it.

Everyone is different! I am 9 days out and eating my foods. Chewing real good and small bites. I was on full liquids by day three and went right to foods by day 7. liquids did nothing for me. I was starving every day. Once I started eating real foods it all changed. I felt very satisfied and full... hallelujah! I have a friend who was on puree for months. I have had zero trouble. No nausea or vomiting and have yet to experience anything that doesn't agree with me.

I was on clear liquid for 10 days then to Protein shakes and Jello, etc. Eating any kind of sold food was a minimum of 30 days post surgery so I'm still pretty new. My surgeon recommended 75 grams a Protein per day once I started the shakes. The one thing I've learned through this forum is that post op instructions vary significantly from one surgeon to the next. I agree with many of the posts I've read that you should confirm with your surgeon and then follow their instructions. I don't know that you necessarily have to eat solid food just because it's allowed as long as you're meeting the nutritional requirements. I'm 6 weeks post op and still having a few issues with solid food.........I can only eat very small amounts of anything solid at a time.............but everyone is very different.

I'm still really glad that I decided to have the sleeve - I'm feeling pretty terrific and have been steadily losing weight. Life is good.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
