Liquids taste horrible to me!

Recommended Posts

Hi, everybody. I recently underwent gastric bypass surgery on 09/21/16. I'm having a very strange problem and I'm wondering if anyone else has experienced this. I am having a lot of trouble getting my daily liquid requirements in. liquids don't taste good to me. In fact, they taste absolutely awful. This isn't nausea. This is strictly an issue with taste. I do fine with chicken broth, Soups, and Jello. It's things like Water, Decaf tea, crystal light, etc that I can't tolerate. Everything seems to have a very exaggerated aftertaste to the point that I need to use a mouth rinse to get rid of the taste. Water has a very metallic taste to me. It's as if I can taste every mineral in the water. I've tried all different brands of bottled water and I get the same result to varying degrees. I tried many different brands of Protein prior to surgery and found that I liked Premier Protein best. For some reason, it tastes completely different to me now. It has a very slimy taste now and I almost gag trying to drink it. Has anyone else experienced anything similar to this? I am so thirsty and obviously not getting in my protein requirements. Any suggestions or recommendations? I'm a nurse and I know how important it is for me to be compliant with the daily requirements for Fluid and protein. I'm at a complete loss with this. Please help.

Hi DogRescuer I am 3 years out, I can say I had the same thing happen to me, everything tasted like minerals very strong. I still have it happen sometimes it will taste bitter. I also have been blessed with what I call a super smeller!! I can smell things that noone elswe smells. Like Cigarette smoke. YUK Noone smokes here and sure not inside. ( my daughter smokes outside) but I ca smell it very strongly. Also I use to love onions and garlic....NOT the smell makes me sick. Hubby cooks with both all the time!! Even going thru McDonalds for my SF FF vanilla LATTE the smell of french fries and old grease make me sick!! I don't know why this happens but I have heard others talk about it too. Hopefully yours will pass!! Good luck

It is common for your taste buds to change after surgery. I remember in the hospital after surgery I could not drink the Water because it tasted very chlorinated. Eventually I found flavored water such as Crystal Light to work O.K. Many experience problems drinking Protein shakes. I hated them. But in the beginning I drank them, three 16-ounce Protein Shakes a day, in order to meet my Protein requirements. You do not have to like Protein Shakes only tolerate them. There are many varieties of protein shakes available today. Experiment until you can find one you can tolerate. Over time as your meal volume increases, if you concentrate on consuming high protein meals, you can begin to reduce your reliance on protein shakes. I went from 3 a day, down to 2, down to 1 and eventually none when I reached 1 cup per meal at a year and a half post-op.

For the first few weeks after surgery, many patients find it difficult to meet their protein and Fluid requirements. Your body is in a major heal mode. So don't be too concerned right at the beginning, just keep trying to meet the goal and within a few weeks you should be able to get there.

I for one have had a very hard time finding a Protein Drink I could tolerate. I liked Atkins Protein Drink and bars also for a bar Iliked PowerCrunch. Finally after all of this time and spending more money than I could count on different drinks to just give them away I found GENEPRO unflavored Protein and it doesn't have a taste at all. Now I am a coffee drinker and I make myself a LATTE and whisk a scoop of GENEPRO in warm Water to mix it and then add it to my coffee. You can use this in anything you want. It has 30grams of protein in 1 scoop. I love it!!

Buy single servings of Protein powders until you find ones that you like. Isopure I don't like. Intex and phormula I like. I also loved the bariatric pal strawberry short cake and I just got a orange cream from them. I have a vanilla one I like from costco too. I have about 8 different flavors so I don't get sick of one kind.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
