My Journey began Sept. 28th, 2016

Recommended Posts

I'm so excited. My surgery process has been painless. The only thing I can complain about is gas. Wow, so much gas. My bypass was under 2 hrs. By the time I woke up I didn't even have a tube in. Happy for that. I did have a Foley which was taken out yersterday. Still do have the drainage, which isn't draining much. I've been walking without pain. My doctor prefers 2 days no food or liquid until he orders that barium test to check for leaks. That Barium is very nasty, thank God it was only like 3 sips. I was brought some broth after that and some Liquid Protein. I've been able to tolerate. I take a sip every 15 minutes. Hopefully I go home today. It's gonna be difficult but I will get thru this. So will you guys. We got this!!! Good luck!!!

The gas is horrible for most. Walking helps big time!!! I have used Papaya Enzymes they really help with the gas and aid in digestion. I buy them at Walmart for less tthan $5.00. In fact I got them yesterday for a liittle over 3.00. They have saved me so many times.

Something to help with your potty issues. Take some dried prunes cover with Water and steep them then eat 2 or 3 of them and sip some of the prune juice. You will go potty for sure!!

If you want to try something besides the pill form, my mom for ears used dried papaya. She said it worked for her!! Yuk on the papaya chunks!! I'm not fond of fresh papaya. Just take the pill form and chew them up works every time!!

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
