How do I find a therapist familiar with bariatric surgery?

Recommended Posts

I live in southern Maryland which is a wasteland for health services, but close enough to DC/NoVA that I selected a hospital/surgeon about an hour away (90 minutes in traffic). I used their suggested doctor for my psychiatric assessment (who is even further away) but she said I needed to see someone regularly throughout the process (I have anxiety that's not well controlled and depression that's well controlled).

Right now I'm scheduled to keep seeing her (and she's willing to do some phone appointments so it's not really terrible), but how do I find a therapist (closer!) who is familiar with WLS for long term care?

Thanks,

Denise

You could try the ASMBS resources. Start here:

https://asmbs.org/patients/find-a-provider

and switch the radio button to "Integrative Health." Then put in your location -- you can search by state, or by radius from a particular city or zip code. Your search results will include therapists, psychologists, etc -- also some people like physical therapists and dietitians, but you can just scroll past them. Good luck!

Bufflehead had a good suggestion, I didn't know about that one!

I like psychology today

https://therapists.psychologytoday.com/rms/state/Maryland.html

You can choose eating disorders or weight loss as a issues. You can choose the insurance too.

After that, I called and asked them about their experience with weight loss surgery patients.

Good luck

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
