Does sleep apnea delay the process?

Recommended Posts

I just got the results on a sleep apnea that the surgeon ordered, and sure enough I have sleep apnea. AHI 20, whatever this means. I have,an appoi tment for medical clearance on 10/10, but does this mean it will be delayed? Does anyone know what happens at this point? Feeling a bit discouraged. Thanks in advance.????

I had one done on 7/25 I've been using a cpap machine for a month straight plus a couple of days. Anyway, I had 48 events per hour and I'm on an airflow of 14. This has not prevented anything in terms of surgery. I was told to bring the machine with me to the hospital. Business as usual... lol

You may need to be put on a CPAP. Some surgeons/Anesthesiologist require 30 days on the CPAP before surgery but that may not be the case for you. I don't believe that AHI20 is bad (just mild sleep apnea).

Call your surgeon's office and talk to the RN. If you do need a CPAP - get that moving right away.

Usually it wont delay anything as long as they get you on cpap if you need it. The anesthesiologist will require you bring it with you for surgery. They want to make sure that you are on cpap as you come out of surgery especially since you are given pain medications.

I would call and ask.

I was diagnosed a sleep apnea like a month ago and my surgery is next week. It didn't delay anything. I stopped breathing 147 times an hour but mine is super severe apparently.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
