Surgery in few hours.... nervous!

Recommended Posts

Today is the day. I wish I could say I am as calm as a cucumber but that is not the case.

I have been preparing since Feb for this and am so ready for it. I just have that looming page of risks I had to initial in the back of my head now since last week which I always knew were the risks, but as it got close and I had to formally acknowledge them its got my nerves going crazy today.

Praying for my peace of mind and guidance for my surgeon and anesthesiologist today. Also praying for everyone else going through surgery today too.

You are perfectly normal. Think of it like stage fright. You prepare and practice. You are now on the stage wings ready to walk on. You know you have confidence with your surgeon. It's just last minute jitters. For the rest of us waiting for our surgery, we will all feel the same way. Let us know how you go.

I'm excited for you. There were three big days for me: 1) The day my appeal was approved. 2) My very last hoop to clear for surgery and 3) surgery day. You'll do great, just deep breathe. It is definitely normal to feel nervous and/or anxiety before any surgery. *hugs*

I'm tomorrow and the jitters are starting but I've experienced this with other surgeries I've had a before leaving on some big trips. It's the unknown. Just remember you did all the checking of the available types of surgeries and picked the best for you, they have to make those papers you are sounding represent the worse case scenario, you probably checked out your surgeon and their record, every surgeon wants the best possible results for their patient because it is their record people will be looking at plus they want their patient to be successful and happy. You take a risk every time you step in a car, get on a plane, or get in a tub. Have faith in you outcome and ready to start your new life. I wish you great success and your surgeon a wonderful day of begining your transformation of the rest of your life. Positive thoughts.

By the time you see this, your surgery will be over and you will be on a path to a better, happier, healthier way of life. Being nervous is normal, but focus on being excited and ready. It won't always be easy-but it WILL BE OK and well worth it! Praying for you and all taking this life changing journey. At age 63 I'm 3 months post op, 50lbs lighter and thankful I made this decision. Keep us posted on progress ????

I am out. Surgery was completed at 11:30 yesterday morning. I was in a lot of pain immediately when I woke up but that's slowly subsided. I do do have a drain but it is not bugging you too much. I have been up to walk a few times and that has been the hardest part so far as it feels like my muscles need to stretch and that hurts. My few hours I'll be able to do the barium swallow test and hopefully then be able to drink some Water. Fingers crossed. Thank you all for your positive comments and thoughts and you guys are the best.

Best to you, I can imagine how nervous you were yesterday. Meeting Dr. today and just nervous deciding to make the decision. I have never had surgery and it scares me. Keep us updated and good luck with test and pain management.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
