I really need support for what's ahead...Revision of my sleeve to bypass.

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I had the upper GI and the endoscopy. I have intractable bile reflux, which has damaged my esophagus. I also have a small sliding hiatal hernia which causes a slight amount of discomfort when I eat. My surgeon has decided to revise my sleeve to bypass. I was fine with all of this, but I think the stress is wearing me down. I am so tired and scared. I know this is necessary, but for some reason, my anxiety is off the charts. I was nowhere near this anxious before the sleeve. I know it will make me feel better, and I am hoping I will feel less anxiety once the surgery is scheduled. Just waiting for BCBS to approve everything and I will get the next possible date to go to the OR since I have esophageal erosion. Has anyone else had this done? Please share your experience...I want to know what I can expect. So discouraged to start over, but blessed to have a plan!

Good luck on your surgery. Intractable bile reflux sounds a little like GERD. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. One of the reasons why I had RNY was because I had severe acid reflux (GERD). Sleeve will only make this condition worse. I have not been bothered with GERD since my operation. This article explains my experience with RNY. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

@@James Marusek, thank you for your reply. Yeah, bile reflux feels like GERD. Except it's not really stomach acid causing the problem; it's pure bile. I wake up choking on it. My gallbladder is gone, so I think that makes it worse too. I know I will be feeling much better soon. Thanks again for your reply!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
