ACK! Surgery is this Friday!

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I am scheduled to have RNY this Friday in Tiajuana. I am so excited. I am a little worried but overall so excited. My sugars are absolutely horrible. Even on the Clear liquids my fasting is 250. I am so hopeful to see totally different numbers after the surgery. To finally, regain energy, feel my age, to not pee every 15 mintues!!! I have put down a goal weight but I don't really have one. I have a goal of a 4.9 A1C and fasting numbers under 100.

Tomorrow I pack and head to Orlando for my 6am flight on Thursday. I welcome all post op tips and packing things to not be forgotten.

Thanks in advance!

Heather

Heather!

Best Wishes on your surgery!!! I am most likely a November gal at least that's my goal anyway. I have to get my A1C down under 9! It was 12 the end of July and my surgeon won't do it unless I am down.

Won't it be nice to not have to really worry about our diabetes! Keep us posted on your journey!

Janice

Hi everyone

I had my RNY on July 2, 2013. I was on Insulin 2 times a day and 500mg of METFORMIN 2 times daily. I took 12 different medications. I am off all diabetes meds plus I take less than 1/2 of my blood pressure meds now. I had hoped to get off of them also but I just can't figure out how to destress!! If anyone figures it out please let me know. LOL I now take 4 different meds plus my Vitamins. I got off my insulin and metformin almost immediately after my surgery. My Highest weight (this time)249 Surgery weight 232 Lowest weight 117#'s ( way too low for me my Dr's were getting worried) Current weight 125#'s. I'm 60 years old I am 5.4. I have Fibromyalgia and Arthritis but now after the weight loss I am able to exercise!! I walk 4 miles a day 4 to 5 days a week!! I know without my WLS I wouldn't be able to do these things at all. So just realize getting off Diabetes medication is a real PLUS to WLS!! Good Luck Keep on keeping on!!

Good luck on your surgery. I am 3 years post-op RNY gastric bypass. I have been off my diabetic meds the day I left the hospital 2 days after surgery and haven't taken any since.

Hi Grandma Jan my PCP says my lack of diabetes is more good luck than good planning . Both sides of family as well as both parents. So I may be dodging just in time? R-n-y are you ready for me? I m ready and waiting for you, just getting my sleep study results in. Then late October early November, k-slash, trochar and business day.! Since I'm 70 my "golden" years are gonna be that.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
