Hi everyone,

I am almost a week post op but I still have a drain. The drain has been leaking around the hose and not just into the bulb. So I have been having to pack it with gauze and tape and change the dressings twice a day or more if I leak through. Has anyone else dealt with this and How long till your surgeon removed the drain.

Thank You

That doesn't sound normal. I stayed overnight in hospital and my drain was taken out before I was discharged. I would call dr

Actually, if you were having a lot of drainage in the bulb prior to discharge, they will leave the drain in. Removal varies but is based on amount of drainage. It is odd that they would leave the drain in and still have you pack around it. Is there still a lot of drainage in the bulb also?

The doctor was aware and didn't seem concerned. The drainage was about 1oz or so a day. Didn't seem like much in the bulb. But the amount coming out around it has been extreme. I'm seeing my surgeon tomorrow and hoping he removes this this.

It doesn't sound like you are ready to have the drain removed sorry!!

Drains are generally removed when the drainage is minimal. From what you are describing, this is not the case. If the drain wasn't there, this Fluid would cause a collection or seroma which then usually require draining. Talk to your surgeon and/or nurse for their advice. Try to be patient. I know I'd be wanting it out if it were me too but I've been there with other surgery.

I had a drain in place for 10 days. My leaked and I used gauze and changed it like you have. It's to help prevent infection per what my dr told me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
