Major depression after surgery.

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery in June. I started at 340lbs and I now weight 262lbs. I've lost almost 80lbs. Weight has always been an issue in my life, but I'm feeling more depressed than I ever had in my life. I've suffered from depression for years and food was always my emotional outlet. Nothing ever comforted me as food has. This surgery has also really shown me how awful people are and how different people treat you. I'm struggling so much.

The combination of hormone fluctuations due to fat loss and an existing food addiction can be difficult.

I agree that finding a good therapist can be extremely helpful. Your PCP is also a good person to talk to about finding some treatment options for your depression.

You also may want to consider exploring attending bariatric support group meetings as well as a recovery group like Overeaters Anonymous to help you find healthy ways to cope without turning to food. You can find meeting lists and other resources online at OA.org.

Not sure about your surgical team, but my team had a therapist on staff and a support group that meets twice per week. You might check with your team to see if they have a group or therapist on staff or one that they can recommend. Glad to see you are acknowledging it and looking for help! That's great.

Also, congrats on the successful weight loss so far...that's a great milestone!

I'd also recommend finding a professional that you can talk to. How have people treated you differently after the surgery?

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
