Talk to your PCP about what you can do to lower it. You need to eat healthy, 5-6 small meals, exercise and avoid processed foods. Be sure to take meds as prescribed. You have to stick with a diabetic diet.

does the team have a NUT? the A1c is a 3 month value - so if they have to postpone keep trying. you may need medication or a medication change to bring this about. keep pursuing it.

the most important things I learned when I was a diabetic is to always have a Protein whenever you have a carb. go as low carb as you can now. the truth is that is very hard when you are a diabetic. it's really easy to say and hard to do. but the more Protein less carbs will help - but it is a value that takes time. when I was a diabetic I could eat very little fruit. so veg and lean protein as much as possible.

and realize they have this rule for your safety. If they want that number lower it is so you can have a good, safe recovery.

Ran into the same problem on my final visit with the surgeon (was supposed to be scheduled for surgery). I was upset being that the test which they were going off of, had been taken over a month prior. My A1C was at 10.2, I was advised that it needed to be below 7 prior to surgery. I was started off on a low dose of insulin (1x day), in addition to the Glyburide and Metformin I had been taking. My blood sugar dropped from the mid to high 100's to around 120 almost immediately.

I was afraid that my surgery would be pushed back at least 3 months (A1C gives a measure of past 3 months), to give time for the count to come down to the needed level. The doctor advised me that there was a older test, which the A1C replaced, that would give a accurate current result after a month. When I returned for the follow up test 4 weeks latter, the level had dropped to 6. I was scheduled for surgery a week latter.

I continued on my meds and insulin untill the day prior to surgery, at which point my dosage of insulin was cut in half. Have not had to use the insulin since that time. When I was sent home after a 3 day stay in the hospital (have issues with my heart), I was told that I could continue the Metformin and Glyburide and insulin if my tests became to high. I lasted 2 days on the pills only, my blood sugar levels were dropping way too low. I have not taken any meds or insulin since that time. I still check my blood sugar levels on a regular basis. I average between 85 and 110, depending on the diet. It will be interesting to see what the A1C lat my 6 month follow up tests.

I have followed a strict low-carb (less than 20 per day), high Protein diet for the last six months. Not only have I lost almost 100 pounds pre-op, but ALL of my medical clearance lab work for surgery was in the NORMAL range!

It is amazing what cutting out the carbs will do for you...

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
