Hi everyone. I was sleeved the day before yesterday. I've been trying to drink my Water and Protein Shakes. It hurts when the water or shake goes down. Is this normal? I also had a large hiatal hernia repaired during the sleeve surgery. I know this is something I should discuss with my surgeon but it's Saturday. Thanks in advance for any input.

I had the same problem for the first few days after the surgery. I could feel it when it hit my stomach and it was very uncomfortable -- to the point that it took me an hour just to drink 3oz, and that was a push. I did find that I tolerated warm liquids a little better. I also found that Water for whatever reason was the worst -- so you might try something like Crystal Lite to see if you tolerate it a little better. Some diluted apple juice also worked nicely.

It should pass though. By day 4, it was a lot easier for me.

Thank you - I'm glad to hear this is not uncommon and that it will get better.

Totally normal. I'm almost 7 weeks post op and still have that problem with certain things. I wondered the same thing when I was a few days out and even posted it here so don't worry! It's normal. You'll feel better after a few weeks.

So many of us had hernias, including me and my husband. Sip sip sip and your body and gut instinct should tell you when to go to the ER. Trust yourself. It will get better and better.

I had a hiatal hernia repair too along with my sleeve. Yes, it's very uncomfortable at first. Believe it or not, you're going to feel a lot better in a week or two. Seems hard to believe, I know. I didn't believe it either!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
