Who decides surgery type?

Recommended Posts

Just went to the initial seminar and scheduled the consult. Wondering if I can decide which of the surgeries I want to have, or is it solely up to the surgeon to make that decision? Thanks!

hopefully you and your surgeon will go over the risks and benefits (depending on your personal needs) and you will both feel the same surgery is the correct one for you.

I picked the surgery I wanted. My Dr agreed. If I couldn't have the surgery I wanted, I would have refused surgery.

Back in 2009, I picked the lap band, but in 2016 my new doctor suggested a revision to sleeve. I am happy with his suggestion and am happy with the surgery so far.

Thank you, everyone. I wasn't sure how that was determined, or if certain surgeries require a higher BMI or other parameters.

There are some considerations regarding different surgeries, and BMI and co-morbidities are a couple of those considerations. I never considered a DS, was leaning heavily toward sleeve vs bypass due to my age, weight/BMI and lack of severe co-morbidities...happily, my surgeon agreed with me and was thinking of sleeve for me as well.

It's a decision that should be made by the two of you, based on your knowledge of yourself and your habits and your surgeon's professional expertise. The one thing that needs to be clearly understood about WLS is that it's a partnership...your surgeon can do any of the surgeries and it will only work as well as the confidence you have in it and effort you put toward it. Good luck in making your decision!

I went into my initial meeting with the surgeon with no preference, so he suggested the gastric sleeve. I preferred to rely on their experience and knowledge.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
