Hi I'm just starting journey and I'm a little confused by information from my insurance co.

I'm from Michigan and have Priority Heath ins.

Does anyone know if they require the 6 month supervised diet? The Bariatric clinic said they did but when I called my insurance co. They said "yes if your Dr. requires it"

I guess I'll have to do a little more digging :/

Hi, fellow Michigander! I had Priority when I was going through the surgery process. My plan did require a 6-month supervised diet. There are variations between different Priority plans, but I think most do carry that 6-month requirement. Priority also does not let you count Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, etc. It had to be "physician-supervised." At least that was the deal 2 years ago when I started the whole process.

Good luck!

If it makes you feel any better, the 6 months flew by and I was actually glad that it was required. I used that time to learn all my new habits: no drinking while eating, cutting out carbonation, and breaking my food into 6 small meals a day. I do think it better prepared me for life after surgery, even though in the moment it felt like a bunch of hoops to jump through and a time waster.

Good luck! I hope everything goes well for you!

Thank you! I appreciate the input, I think February or March is a better time of year to have the surgery anyway. I can still enjoy this holiday season (responsibly) and start to lose weight before summer :)

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
