Post-op plans, travel

Recommended Posts

Is it at all reasonable to plan a weekend ski trip one month post op? After reading many peoples experience it seems that most are still in pretty bad shape by this time. I don't have my surgery date but it seems likely to be early to mid-November. Made plans with family to go on a short ski trip around December 19th not realizing at the time this would be my likely surgery time-line. Now not sure what to do as I'm not telling them about my surgery.

Your insides won't be healed and I doubt it would be safe. Check with your Dr. Better safe

It really depends. Some people on here have a HARD time recovering. I'm relatively young and recovered really well from surgery. I traveled at 2.5 weeks out for a 2 week period and was fine. I was pretty active- hiking, swimming, boogie boarding, walking many miles a day etc. I felt amazing.

I'm an avid skier myself and I think I would have been fine to hit the slopes a month post op. Maybe more tired than usual, but would have been doable for me.

My only concern would be carrying the equipment. Check on your lifting restrictions with your surgeon. If I recall correctly, I had no lifting restrictions after 2 weeks but might be different for you.

I think I'm going to cancel or at least postpone the trip. I'm 50 so I'm not sure how easy my recovery will be. And although I'm generally a very active person, I've been sidelined lately because of foot problems which seem to be unlikely to resolve before surgery so I won't be in as good of shape going in as I would like. Thanks for the advice everyone.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.
