Gastric bypass- Toronto Ontario - they wont do a sleeve?

Recommended Posts

in all of canada no matter what city they will only cover rny unless medically needed to perform sleeve. they say it's their "gold standard" and they see to many revisions from sleeve to rny.

Breuxo, that is incorrect information. For example, I am in Montreal and 3 of my cousins have had VSG surgery in the last year and I am on the list too and none of them even discussed Bypass with their doctors. At the Montreal General they will not even suggest Bypass unless your BMI is extremely high or is required for some other medical issue. And the surgery is covered 100% by Quebec medicare provided you have a BMI of 50 or 35-40 BMI if you have either sleep apnea, high blood pressure and few others I can't remember. The doctor will make his suggestion based on your health and weight but you can decide which doctor you want to perform the surgery and which surgery you want. It may vary in other provinces as well but Ontario's rules definitely do not apply here in Quebec.

I did my Bypass in Montreal on 2015, we had an option to choose between sleeve or bypass! I asked my doctor's opinion on it and the doctor who did the surgery on me said base on my age 40, he said choose bypass! Reasons: he said sleeve is new( 7 years) and still doctors don't know in long term how the maintenance of weight loss is going to last! They are assuming that you may gain back easily with sleeve! On the other hand he said the bypass is done since 50 years ago and the doctors have a good understanding of it and is less risky! He said if I would be in my 60 s he would have suggested the sleeve cause the result is fast enough and in that age you don't really care in how many years there will be a risk to gain it back! I did the surgery for other health issues and was 209 lb before my pre surgery diet and on the surgery day was 199! It was way slower for me to lose and in 20 months I lost 42 lb! Today I weigh 157! They said that I lost over 75% of my extra weight which is really good but I still feel I need to lose another 17 lb! Which at this time after 20 months is really hard and slow! I am very happy with my choice and had no complications! Wish you luck and either way you won't regret your choice!

Dr Aggarwal in General hospital but they did the surgery in Lachine hospital!

Was wondering because I had dr Christou and he said virtually the same thing, verbatim about why he preferred bypass. Sleeve was my backup plan.

We've been a group of 15 people in our meeting and mostly they chose the sleeve cause had to take fewer Vitamins afterwards but me and another lady younger than me and both didn't have to lose more than 50lb, been suggested bypass over sleeve! We are both very happy of the result and process! You've been in a good hands as well! Dr Christou is a well known one with many years of experience in doing this surgery! He was doing this just privately in his clinic in last couple of years! Mine was covered with medical! And I was one of the luckiest one from the day of my Family dr. Referral to surgery didn't even take 6 months!

Wow under 6 months is amazing. I am set to have my Q&A meeting on the 16th and that will be 9 months in for me. Then I have to wait to meet Dr. Aggraval for my one on one to be put on his list for surgery. The Montreal General unfortunately fell behind during the summer due to 2/4 of the doctors being on vacation so now the surgery is taking people who registered around my time about 14 months.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
