Esophageal dialation

Recommended Posts

Well, my last NUT appt is next week! The final step. Or so I thought. When I met my surgeon the first time, it was determined that I didn't need an EGD. For 2 years, I dealt with esophageal strictures. It started after I got really sick in Afghanistan. From 2012-2014, I had several EGDs and my esophagus dialated about 5X. I've been good since early 2014, not even really dealing with GERD symptoms. Out of nowhere, about 2 weeks ago, I started having swallowing problems AGAIN! liquid is the most difficult. It's been waking me up around 0200-0300 every morning. I constantly feel like I have a lump in my throat. I tried to make an appt with my PCM today, to see if I could get a referral to a GI doc. I was pretty much resolved to the fact that this would delay my surgery. Well.... I couldn't get in with my PCM, so I decided to call my surgeon who will be doing my sleeve She can do the EGD and dilate my esophagus in 2 weeks! This is the day after my last NUT appt. Now I won't have to delay surgery. I feel so much relief.

Good luck with the procedure and surgery. I saw that you were from Lawton, OK and it brought some really good memories for me. Lawton was our first residence as a married couple some 37 years ago! I lived in an old house on Ferris Ave. right across from the museum. I loved watching the prairie dogs! Great year of my life... AND my husband wasn't in the army like most folks there but worked at the Goodyear plant.

@AmiLou. You would be surprised by how much Lawton has changed! I've been here since 2003. Can't say it's where I want to stay but I'm here for now. I retired from the Army in 2014, so I've made this home for the time-being. The prairie dogs are still at Elmer Thomas Park, but there aren't as many. They were starting to destroy the area, so they had a large amount of them moved. There was a big controversy over that. Right by where you lived, there is now a Kohl's, Bed, Bath and Beyond, Dick's Sporting goods and many other stores, restaurants, etc. They've actually revitalized the downtown area. Goodyear is still a big employer here. I actually live out that way.

So tell me, how did your surgery go and how are you doing with everything? Weight loss? Good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
