What to tell people?

Recommended Posts

I've read all the chains on who to tell. My question is we have family friends who are wanting to make plans to go on trips i.e. camping and ATV riding now that it's getting to be fall. They're looking at the weekend of and the weekend after my surgery. Obviously I can't go for a while after surgery and without telling them what's going on, I feel like we are just blowing them off. The husband keeps suggesting dates, and my husband keeps replying with "we're busy , I don't know what we're doing, but we're busy". I'm not sure what to say. I don't want to lie, but I also don't want to share this. Any suggestions?

Mayb just tell them u are having a procedure done. U don't have to go into detail but just let them know afterwards you won't be able to be too active for alittle while.

Give them your own suggested dates when you would be able to do it.

We were out of commission around a week. After that you could go camping or somewhere and take your Protein Shakes and Soups, etc. We went through Thanksgiving three years ago sipping chili, which was delicious!

You can always plan something and cancel if necessary! You will recover quickly! I never even felt I had surgery. Until I choked on a soft piece of chicken six weeks out, LOL

So I tried the story of "I'm having a procedure" and nothing else. Didn't go over well. I guess it would be ok if they were distant friends we didn't see all the time. But now they are all worried and things are weird because there's this big secret. Think I'm going to tell them the gallbladder story. I hate to lie, I just don't want to tell the truth. I'm afraid it will make me more nervous and I might chicken out. I get that this sounds like the rantings of a kinder and not a 40something adult :-) thanks for helping despite that fact!

I told everyone I'm having a surgery done and need time to recover but wasn't specific. Only one pushed for details (I think most are concerned about their own life and just hope you are safe and well), and I said to fix an old problem. No lies on my part. I've always been a private person by nature.

Post surgery you will be thankful you didn't tell anyone. We have social friends who go ON and ON about our weight loss, and make me want to scream. If they knew about the surgery, the world would know. These are mostly our neighbors, so there is no avoiding them. I am not ashamed to tell people, it was my husband's one request, and now I am grateful for that decision.

We were gone from home half a day each for the sleeve, and then home. Never even told my husbands adult son. If I had been working I could have taken 2-3 days off for vacation and no one would have known. I feel bad for the people here that have so much pain and problems, because at 66 my husband and I had so little pain and no problems.

I decided I'm using the hernia lie. I've only even told a handful of people that I was having surgery (because I had to coordinate no lifting for 6 weeks for a volunteer position). I feel like if I say I'm having surgery then all this weight loss they will easily put it together. Only one person asked what my surgery was for and I felt so awkward lying, but I did it! I'm a SAHM in a smaller town and I just don't really want to be a gossip subject with all the other SAHM's.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
