Recommended Posts

Since my surgery can no longer be covered by hh repair I have been looking up doctors in Tijuana, Mexico. My family is so against going to Mexico for surgery ( My mom watches Botched). I really want this surgery I just don't know how to win my family over.. Help! How did yall explain to yall's family?

If you are an adult, why does it matter what your family thinks?

I agree with @OutsideMatchInside. If you're an adult then what does it matter what they think? Do what you need to do for your health.

We were treated absolutely amazing in Mexico! I trust my surgeon and his team more than any health care provider in my area and I work in the health care industry.

I am having my surgery in Mexico next week with Dr. Illan through Bariatric Pal. The only person that I felt I needed to "win over" to this decision was my husband, so he joined me in a call with BP and was able to address all his concerns. Dr. Illan will also do Skype or FaceTime consultations. There is a Facebook group where you can hear everyone's stories and everyone raves about the care they received. I (and my husband) couldn't be more comfortable with this decision! As an adult, your family and friends should support your decision, but if there are any opinions that are particularly meaningful, it may help to expose them to the reality instead of the sensationalized horror stories. Good luck!!

Maybe show them lots of before and afters, and some videos from Dr. Alvarez (I didn't go to him but I love his videos hehe), and also let them see the reviews?

If my surgery hadn't covered it, ultimately, I would have gone that route myself. I'd reached the point where I'd tried everything else and WLS equaled my last chance for a healthy life.

Many people experience Medical Tourism and are very happy with the results. There are also some who weren't happy, but that holds true with every type of surgery in or out of country.

It is your decision in the end, of course, but if you want to help alleviate your family's fears, share your research and testimonials from other patients. There are also videos on YouTube and other sites.

You can't promise there will be no complications, but you can strengthen your case for having it done.

Good luck!

This is so very true. A good friend of mine went in for a routine surgery on September 5th (not WLS). She almost died and is still in the ICU over 2 weeks later. This happened at a very good hospital here in the states. Just because a surgery happens in the US doesn't mean it's going to go perfectly. And just because a surgery happens in Mexico doesn't mean it's going to go badly.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
