Weight gain post surgery. Help!

Recommended Posts

I am freaking out and need smart advice.

During the 2 week period (pre surgery and post surgery) I lost 22 lbs. I was thrilled when I weighed in at my 1 week post op checkup. I went from

BUT I weighed myself at home few times in the 2 weeks since and I have gained weight. I feel so discouraged and upset. I am following the diet averaging 50g of Protein a day and 55 ounces of Water a day. The other day I realized that I am drinking to close to eating times and I have now adjusted to 15 minutes before and 30/40 after. Even with that, how could I GAIN weight?!?!

My partner told me to stop weighing myself (which I have done) and have faith in the tool.

I feel like the surgery did not work or that I am doing something wrong. My 3 week checkup is in 2 days and I am terrified to step on the scale.

HELP!!!!!!!

You are probably experiencing the dreaded 3 Week Stall. I couldn't find the link to the article about it but I'm sure someone will post it. Our bodies figure out that the calorie deficit we have forced upon it is going to be long-term and goes into starvation survival mode. I have not yet had surgery but I've read enough on this site to know this is very common and weight loss will continue.

In the morning I mix isolated whey Protein into sugar free pudding. That's about 20-25 grams. For lunch I usually have Greek yogurt about 11 grams. Then I mix the Protein powder into hummus for about 10 grams for snack. For dinner I started having 2 oz of tuna fish for about 20 grams. Or sometimes I have egg beaters and refried Beans for dinner or even snack for a little more Protein.

@@lauren66 It's very common to stall at this point. Your body is adjusting. Stay off the scale! You will notice clothes loosening even when the scale might not show a loss. Weight can fluctuate - you could be retaining Water, getting your period, constipated. I would say you should increase Protein and fluids though. The minimum is usually 60 gms protein and at least 64 ozs fluids. Hang in there!

Thank you for the advice. I will put more effort into increasing Protein and Water. Am about to get period so maybe that's also a factor. I do notice a difference in clothes and my measurements show that I have lost 19" overall. Thanks again for alleviating some of my concerns.

My dr told me to eat every 2-3 hours. She said it will increase the weight loss because your body will start to recognize it will be fed regularly and start burning again . Hang in there! This is a process for all of us and we will all make it together!

Totally normal, don't panic! I lost a quick 13 the first two weeks then was stuck for like 10 days and then started started seeing a few lbs come off. I literally had my 4 week check in with my surgeon today and he said he didn't even start looking for real loss until this point. It boils down to 3 things. 1) hit your hydration and Protein target. 2) stay off the scale 3) trust the process.

Really appreciate everyone's help. Any advice on how to hit the hydration mark. Having problems making it over 55 per day.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
