How have your taste buds changed?

Recommended Posts

I am just over 1 month post op, and I used to be a coffee freak. I loved the taste of it and couldn't do without it in the morning. Now, I drink about 4 oz. in the morning (that's literally all I can stomach), and I mix the rest with my Protein shake for a little iced mocha action. It thins down the Protein Shake (I used to like them nice and thick, but not anymore) and makes both more palatable.

Spicy foods. I have always loved them, but now they sometimes seem overly spicy. I think that's just my belly telling me I'm not ready for them, though, because they give me bad acid reflux!

And beef. I'm a true Texas girl, and I have always enjoyed brisket. Now, I can't stomach it anymore, but that's probably because my stomach is not ready yet. I'll give it time and try again later.

I used to love sweets - nothing was too sweet for me. I wouldn't eat them a lot, but when I did, I wanted the sweetest thing I could get my hands on. Since surgery, I have not had a single craving for sweets. I thought about indulging myself in chocolate one night, but I changed my mind. I really just didn't want it.

Your taste buds do change. I hated onions and peppers before surgery. Now I love them. I hated fruit now I love it. I try a new food every couple of weeks.

I am 7 weeks post op today. Doing great. Never had pain or the gas pains...so lucky.

I will say my tastebuds have changed. Post surgery I liked Unsweet tea, now does not really have any taste. I wanted to try coffee last week, does not taste good now. Loved lemonade before surgery, now Crystal Light taste different. Before surgery I drank at least two glasses a day. About 529 weeks after surgery I finally was able to drink orange gatorade and it tasted so good. Have switched to the G2. It's better for me (does not taste as good). I drink about half a one a day. Diet Cranberry juice is good.

My doctor told me that this was a possibility.

I'm finding a lot of sweet things aren't as yummy as they used to be, which is good. The oddest thing has been a shift in my Condiments. I used to be all about the ketchup and sweet sweet BBQ Sauce. Now they make me a bit nauseated by themselves. I am now preferring mustard type condiments mixed in.

I didn't care for sweets before the surgery, and now even the thought of biting into a cookie, for example, makes me nauseous. Is it because the surgery, not sure. It could've been from 4 weeks of nothing but "sweet" Protein shakes.

Mine sure did. I stop enjoying

cheese or ground beef oh the texture, dryness. Loved eggs b4 now it's a chore to eat. Salt was too salty and sugars was too sweet but I got over that and now having to many sweets again.

I no longer like things that are super sweet...and some things that were NOT that sweet to me in the past, now are. really weird. Protein shakes in particular. I've become very sensitive to the sweetness level of those...one brand (Lean Body Salted Caramel), i absolutely LOVED during my pre-op diet. Now, i can't even choke one down...too sweet...yuck.

My husband makes the most amazing homemade chicken Soup. He made some when I was in Clear liquids and it tasted so gross. It was like pure liquid chicken fat. He made it a few weeks later (at my request) and it still tasted awful.

I was also a Diet Coke addict for decades. If I could have the stuff fed to me intravenously, I would have been in heaven. Now I'm not even remotely interested or tempted.

Not really at all for me except Protein Shakes gross me out- but that's probably because I am sick to the death of them.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
