Pre Op diet shopping. Protein supplement advice?

Recommended Posts

I know everyone is different but what are your favorite Protein powders/drinks out there?

I don't want all sweet flavors but all I see everywhere is chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. Is there anything non sweet? Any good unflavored brands? What do you mix them with?

Thanks!

I mostly had the Premier Protein in chocolate, vanilla, caramel, and banana and cream. A little bit of the Isopure drinks, but only the berry favors. Didn't start messing with unflavored powder until postop, when I was mixing it into the limited foods in the purée stage.

Syntrax Nectar has a lot of fruit-type flavors that are more on the tart side, like lemonade, fuzzy navel, cherry, grapefruit, and lemon tea. They also have a Cappuccino flavor that you can add instant coffee to if you like a stronger coffee flavor. Unjury makes a chicken broth flavor that a lot of people like (I do), and I think it is Celebrate that makes a Tomato Soup flavor -- I haven't tried that but it gets good reviews.

I'm also a fan of the Chike iced coffee flavor, it's my favorite.

For the RTDs, i favor the chocolate from Muscle Milk (light variety) The taste is actually not bad and it's handy for on the run, for those of us who can't get our butts out of bed on time...

For the powder, I tend towards the GNC.

I used to favor the Isopure drinks, but unless it's over ice and really, really cold...it tastes like a cross between milk and Gatorade, both of which I loathe.

The unflavored unjury is quite good for mixing into stuff. just be careful (like any Protein powder) to not mix it into anything that will be boiled. Denatures the Protein and then is kind of a waste.

Many moons ago (like ten or so, in my first trip through WLS), there was this lo-carb/high protein milk that I mixed the Unjury with and tossed into the freezer. It made a fairly decent ice cream sort of concoction. Unfortunately the milk is no where to be found anymore.

Overall, my advice is to sample a number of the protein supplements (like as suggested above while you are pre-op (don't buy a full case of anything in case it's gross) settle on something for post-op and go with it. By the time you are sometime out and back on regular food, the supplements should not form the entirety of your diet. Handy to help or for maybe one Meal Replacement, but form those good habits with regular food that you will stick with for the rest of your life.

FYI-soy based powder looks, smells and tastes like old sweat socks....bleccchhhh!!!!

For me I like the fusion unflavored Meal Replacement. I mix it with my yogurt, crystal light, etc.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
