Vegetarian

Recommended Posts

:whoo:Hi Everyone,

Has anyone that is a vegetarian had the surgery? My surgery is a week away and the nutritionists at my doctors office is less than educated about it. I know more than she does.

Just curious what you ate during each phase that went down ok.

Thanks

Barb:clap2:

I am almost a vegetarian. I used to live a veggie lifestyle but gave it up to get fat.

I am finding that I can't stand much meat at all. Chewing steak to a paste is gross and revolting and I just don't want it anymore. If I wanted baby food I'd buy baby food. (Gahhh)

As you know the one big issue you get from dead critter is Protein. One Protein = 23 amino acids. You can get the required amino acids from a variety of veggies vs. one piece of meat. As long as you eat a good variety you should be good to go. Most of the time the people that don't get full on fruits & veggies are simply used to getting full on meat. If you are already good to go on a veggie diet you shouldn't have a problem being banded.

Do you eat any fish at all? Or are you a strict, full time vegetarian? For some reason chewing fish bandster style isn't as revolting to me as chewing meat bandster style. I'm quite sure eventually I'll give up fish completely, it's coming soon. In the meantime, I do like Orange Roughy.

Thanks for the reply. Quinoa, a grain, has all 23 amino acids and is the only complete grain Protein source that I know of.

I do try to eat a little fish once in awhile. I may have to up that a few weeks after surgery to please my doctor. We shall see how it goes.

Thanks again

Here is a good link regarding Protein. The one issue I disagree with in this link is that meat protein is superior to plant based protein. The only plant that has all required amino acids is soy, but if you take a combo of veggie sources the protein is just as good of quality as meat Proteins.

I'm vegetarian. My doc told me he'd only had 2 vegetarians prior to me and "one didn't lose very much weight." Whatever. You can totally do it.

I'd been completely veggie for 15 years when I got banded. At my doc's encouragement, I tried to eat fish for a while once I got banded. I ate it maybe 10 times. I'll still try a bite or two -- I even cooked some last week -- but I'm just a pure vegetarian at heart.

To answer your question, I eat a lot of (1) cottage cheese, (2) TVP (nutri system makes a fabulous veggie sloppy joe that you can order a la carte and works wonders for travel), (3) LF cheese (I eat at least 2 babybels a day), (4) soy chips, (5) greek yogurt. I have no probs getting in 50 g of Protein a day, which is what I need for my height/target weight.

As for ameno acids, I have no idea! I'm probably seriously deficient.

I eat fish, so I guess Im a pescatarian. But aside from fish (which provides most of the Protein I need), I eat A LOT of tofu, milk, Beans (I love beans...any kind), and I do supplement with Protein Shakes. If you feel like you want to eat fish, it is very helpful for getting all the protein in (plus good fat as well).

I also eat fish.I love those new thai spice and sun dried Tomato tuna cans!!

I eat some eggs, and egg salad, lots of cheese, some tofu, and hummus and other Beans. I didnt know quinoa was so good I'll have to get more of that. They have little premade salads of it at New Frontiers which is like Whole Foods if you have that.

I limit the tofu/soy products because of the estrogen.I do love that Eggplant tofu thing at Panda express. Otherwise here in CA its pretty easy to get veg or even vegan stuff everywhere.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
