Constant sick feeling

Hello all. I'm hoping that I can get some advice or at least confirmation that I'm not the only one having this issue. I had my RNY 7/21/16, so I'm about 8 weeks out. Im back on normal foods, theoretically, but the issue I've been having the last couple of weeks is that pretty much everything I eat makes me nauseous. I've tried everything. Grilled chicken, ground beef, chili, turkey, cheese, tuna, Beans. Nothing seems to sit well, and I'm at a point where I don't even want to eat because it's not worth being nauseous for the next hour. Even thinking about food just makes my stomach (or what's left of it) turn. The only things I seem to be able to tolerate are my Protein shakes and yogurt. And even those are iffy sometimes. Even though it's hard to believe I'm even thinking this, I'm just so tired of feeling like this that I don't even want to bother with food anymore. Is this normal? My NUT said it takes about 3 months for everything to settle down, but this constant sick feeling is driving me nuts. I did not/have not had any post op complications. Any advice on what I could eat or what I should do? Thanks!

Well - a few responses for you. First, I was nauseas for about 6 months. It was not fun. I took Zofran and it helped. You have to stay hydrated for Zofran to work. Ask your dr to prescribe it (the generic brand and preferably the one that dissolves under your tongue as it works faster). Second, you have to stay hydrated. (I wasn't great at that.) If you aren't hydrated, it can cause nausea. Now lastly, it could be that you have a stricture - which is what I ended up having and they found right at 3 months post-op. It is a complication that occurs typically between 8 and 12 weeks post-op. It is VERY easily fixed with a balloon dilation via an endoscopy. If you keep feeling nauseated and/or reach a point where you cannot keep stuff down (like I did), insist that your surgeon do something such as an endoscopy to see if there is a stricture.

I'm sorry. I know you are miserable. It will get better. Just hang in there and stay after your dr.

That's normal for some people I am 5 weeks post op and still have issues with mealtime but when you find a food or meal that works write out down and make it your go to. I used to love beef now i can't eat it without feeling sick but i can eat the tofu and rice at Chipotle and feel great afterward albeit not much Chipotle ????

Like Daisee, I also had a stricture - two, in fact. One at about six weeks out, the second about 10 weeks out. I'd let your surgeon's office know if you haven't already. If it doesn't improve, they may want to scope you. If it's a stricture, it's a really easy fix.

I was sleeved almost 5 weeks ago. I am nauseous almost all the time too. Yogurt Protein shakes. tuna salad chicken salad. oatmeal. Are the easiest. If I eat anything else. It's not good. Tonight I made beautiful lump crab cakes. I ate almost a half of one. Then I felt bad. I have had the foam thing and thrown up too. After eating grilled chicken. Probably too dry. Maybe one bite too much. Maybe I ate too fast.

I hope that one day I can say I am happy I did this. But stick to basics. Maybe it takes longer to heal. I am fifty years old maybe my body heals slower than others. Keep the faith

Thank you all so much for your replies. It's comforting to know I'm not the only one! Hydration could be it. I have a hard time getting all my fluids in. Again, the nausea. So it's a bit of a catch-22. I will mention it at my next appointment though if it continues. I appreciate all the advice! :)

Transitioning to solid foods such as chicken and steak can be difficult. I relied on softer foods such as chili and Soups. I have put some of my recipes at the end of the following article. http://www.breadandbutterscience.com/Surgery.pdf

The three most important elements after RNY gastric bypass surgery are to meet your daily Protein, Fluid and Vitamin requirements. food is secondary because your body is converting your stored fat into the energy that drives your body. Thus you lose weight.

Weight loss is achieved after surgery through volume control. You begin at 2 ounces (1/4 cup) per meal and gradually over the next year and a half increase the volume to 1 cup per meal. With this minuscule amount of food, it is next to impossible to meet your Protein daily requirements by food alone, so therefore you need to rely on supplements such as Protein shakes.

I can eat without nausea mostly although I feel nauseated All day long. Even Water. To be fair I had some issues before surgery.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
