Cheated on my preop liquid diet, will the dr cancel my surgery?

Recommended Posts

Help I'm on day 9 my surgery is on 9/22 and I have cheated! I don't know what to do, will the dr cancel my surgery. I have been good for the first 3 days then cheated for 3 days now I'm so scared. I want to stick with the liquid diet for the next days until surgery but now I'm scared if I don't say anything.

pre op diets vary so much from doctor to doctor, and also depending on the individual patients needs. You can be sure that they will only postpone surgery if they do not think it is safe for you. talk to your team and let us know how you are doing.

You're going to be okay. I didn't even have a pre op diet. My surgeon felt that the liver shrinking was so minimal that it wasn't even necessary.

That being said, your surgeon wants you to do one, so try to stick to it the absolute best you can from here on out. I know that's easier said than done, but you'll be proud you did because if you can get through this, you can get through anything!

That's kind of like asking, "will my child's teacher not pass him/her because of failing tests"? It's not the teacher fault if your child gets held back, just as it will not be your surgeon's fault if your surgery has to be cancelled/postponed.

Yes, the pre-op diet is to try and shrink the liver , but it is also to demonstrate YOUR commitment to WLS. Are your really ready? Are you fully committed to all of the life changes that have to happen if you are to be successful?

Those are questions that only YOU can answer and demonstrate.

One thing is for sure. You MUST tell your surgeon what you have done. He/she deserves to know what to expect.

I wish you well. We are all here to help when we can, but you have to be willing to help yourself.

Please keep posting and letting us know how you are doing. I for one, would enjoy following your successful and joyful WLS journey. :)

Stick with it the rest of the time. Don't continue to sabotage yourself.

Will your surgeon cancel your surgery? That is up to your surgeon. My surgeon was very clear that if he opened me up and found my liver was not in good shape he would close me up and not complete the surgery.

Ultimately, this is for your benefit so you can have the safest surgery possible.

Your surgeon won't know if you don't tell them. I cheated a couple times on my preop diet and lost 31 pounds in two weeks. I sometimes did a little extra exercise and normally only stuck to the three shakes a day but I did slip in a piece of lean chicken once or twice.

It's not about how much weight lost. You "cheated" by having chicken which is often allowed on a pre-op diet. It completely depends on what you ate to "cheat" - if it's carbs that's more of an issue. Someone recently had their surgery stopped because didn't follow diet and liver was not small enough.

I would level with your surgeon about what you have done. I personally would not want someone cutting into me and operating on my insides without them having 100% complete knowledge and understanding of anything that I had done that had anything to do with the body parts in question.

I have done everything I have been asked to do, and lost 95 pounds, and I am still majorly freaked out about what it going to happen with surgery in 10 short days. I can't imagine how I would begin to even deal with keeping a secret from the doctor on top of my current level of anxiety...

My surgeon told me to lose 10-15 pounds before surgery and gave me a diet to help achieve it. I lost 31 pounds and my surgeon was thrilled and I achieved what he wanted me to. I don't think a piece of chicken here and there while losing 31 pounds is going to magically make my liver increase in size.

I cheated on my pre-op diet with tuna tartare and caviar. I told my surgeon. He was fine with it. So talk to your surgeon and see what they say. That's the only way to get peace of mind.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
