Post op liquid diet question

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm day five post op and getting in about 50oz and that is about as much is I can take. I sip all day and learned hot and warm is best. My question is that on my clear post op liquid diet I see they have allowed me sugar free Jello but if I sip too much it hurts my pouch and I can't imagine trying the Jello. I would like to though and just wanted to ask has anyone else done jello on the post op day 1-7 diet. Also, I can only get in two Protein shakes per day. I am supposed to be up to three and just can't.

Oh thank you so much. Honestly, with people cooking meals at my house and me smelling the great steak and potatoes they have got me wanting a bit more than just plain Water tea and broth. I will try the Jello then I think I'm a tiny bit hungry. Lol. So dime size tiny bites and it went down with no pain?

I ate Jello in the hospital as well.

I too had Jello, they gave it to me in the hospital but I never ate it there. Once I got home it was one of the first things I had. Used baby spoon and took it real slow. Jello turns into a liquid pretty quick in the mouth.

I too ate it. Very tiny bites. I found it made me full very quickly. Re shakes, maybe try thinning them down? What kind are you drinking? I found Premier Protein ready to drink which are only 11 oz with 30g of Protein and quite thin. I still drink 1 a day at about 15 months post-op BUT I didn't find them until I was after the liquid stage. Wait, you are still doing clears. Maybe try Premier once you move on to full liquids?

I did the Jello and it was a success. Thank God because I needed it. So I drink Inspire Protein shakes I have to mix w milk and I get them at Bariatric Eating. They taste great. The other day I had the Atkins and hated the after taste. I have had premiere Protein before surgery and it was okay too haven't tried it after surgery. I will though.

So my clinic wants me to get in 60 oz a day before moving on to puréed stage. Now I'm at 47 ounces and trying to get in a shake before bed to meet my mark. Today I was way too fatigued from not getting in the three shakes. So be aware that it's a must for fellow patients who want to feel good and not like they are lifeless as I felt this morning.

I am 5 days post op. if im reading right, we may have had surgery on the same day, sept 12? Whats really working for me was putting everything i eat in those 1oz containers and eating them very slowly. So if you put your Protein in those containers and fill two up, you end up drinking 2oz and for some reason it seems easier than if it was in a regular cup.

I also do Soups and clear liquid. Same way. Its very hard to eat but i know i have to get my Protein in because if not.. yikes all kinds of problems. and i love Water so what ive been doing is blending ice cubes... and eating ice all day. i also sometimes do crystal light and sugar free popcicles. The other morning i had two sips of coffee with cream. That was nice... so far so good...

But ugh! I feel you when you say, "I smell the steak!" Thats the hard part. The "mind hunger" is still there. Great having a surgisister!!

I, too, had my surgery on September 12th - can I be a surgisister, too, @@Hula96744? :)

I'm still on the clear liquid stage until I have my 1st follow up with my doctor on 9/22. Per instructions, I'm drinking at least 64 oz a day, including at least 60 g clear liquid Protein (Isopure ready-to-drink and nectar powdered).

My question is this: is it normal to feel so weak and run down? I thought if I kept my Protein intake up, I'd have a bit more energy, but I'm worn out. Am I expecting too much only a week after surgery? Surely this isn't my 'new normal' after gastric bypass.

Any advice/feedback is appreciated!

JS

I never had the liquid post-op diet. I was eating mashed potatoes (2 bites, mind you) in the hospital. You're doing well for liquids. Liquids are kinda the major thing for now. I wasnt hitting my Protein goals then either. I dont think many of us were. Just stick to staying hydrated and walking around to get things in your system moving.

Lucky lucky you. With the mash and I'm am being sincere not sarcastic. I know words don't carry our tone of voice. Lol so thank you so much. I have been doing just that. I walked and sipped and walked n sipped. Now I can actually get in 60 oz and that's the minimum they want. In their binder it had read day four like 90 oz. I just laughed and said yeah right. I don't think so. Haha. Thanks again for you advice and help. I appreciate it.

Yes!!! Surgisisters all the way! Oh man Isopure kills me. No matter if its in Protein Drink or clear... im having a hard time with it. And yes i too feel weak and run down. My doc wants me at 5000 steps already and im barely doing 2000. My best investment? Vivofit Garmin... tracks all my steps and i never take it off. But ive noticed that on some days im only getting like 500 steps because im too tired.

But i have lost 14.5 lbs. Today is my one week check up. Hopefully all is well. :) Check with your doc. Maybe he can suggest something. Ill let you know what mine says when i get back.

Have a great restful day sis.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
