Has anyone else experienced this post op?

Recommended Posts

I am 15 days post op & need to see if anyone is experiencing anything like what I am. It is getting easier to eat now & I don't feel any restriction...no sliming, no pb'ing or any stuck feeling in the top part of my chest. What does happen is that anytime after lunchtime I'll eat lunch...for instance & all afternoon I have such terrible gas pains in my lower abdomen but they only start after I have finished eating lunch or dinner. I am not sure if I can still have surgery gas as I haven't been drinking any carbonated drinks. I've read that restriction doesn't happen till first fill but does anyone wake up feeling great in the morning & then get severe lower abdominal gas pains after eating in the afternoons? Just curious. Any feedback would be appreciated. I assumed that gas pains went away after the 2 week mark or at least were very mild.:help:

I had my surgery on august 20th and am experiencing the same feeling. I figured, for myself at least, it was because of all the milk & milk products I was consuming that weren't agreeing with my digestive tract, but it could be something else. I did wonder in the back of my mind if there was any gas from the surgery left. I'll be curious to see if anyone else has any experience with this.

Mary: Have you stopped having milk products? Is it any better? I never thought it would be that but I am having a Protein Shake with skim milk every morning. I'll try to stay off the milk tomorrow (already had cereal) and I'll let you know if it gets any better. Thanks for the reply!!!

I haven't given up the milk products actually! The list of foods my nutritionist gave me to eat for the next two weeks is kind of limited, and most of the food items have milk in one form or another on there (cottage cheese, cheese, Protein drinks, etc)! The gas doesn't bother me when I'm home and can burp as much as I want (sorry if that's tmi lol), but when I'm at work, and sitting up at my computer desk, it sucks!

What do you normally eat for lunch/dinner? I've heard some people complain that products with whey in them (like the carnation Protein drinks) can also cause digestive problems for them. Everybody's different in what they can tolerate. I'm not lactose intolerant, but even before the surgery I knew that milk products sometimes gave me problems.

I hope your pain goes away!

Yeah. And what's funny is that Apple juice does not agree with me. Ang that's what they gave me in the hospital! Funny.

I do wake up feeling great, but I think its because I just got a good night's sleep. I lose energy throughout the day. I need a nap.

For me, it is dairy too! I haven't given it up yet, as I am trying to cut splenda , well all fake sugar as I am getting a rash and I think it might be caused from that. If my skin doesn't clear up soon, I will go back to the splenda and try giving up all dairy and see if that does the trick, as I know it will help my gurgling tummy issues.

has anyone tried taking lactaid with the milk products? I am lactose intolerant and discussed this with the dietitian. I'm too nauseated at the moment to introduce the milk yet, will have to wait another day or two.

I am having the same problem. I had surgery 8/17 and I have no restriction. I have lost about 14 lbs also, but I am eating more and more. I am having a fill on 9/13 so maybe I will begin to lose weight then.

I am, too, wondering about Lactoid or a soy milk that may help with the gas pain. What about Gas X pills? Do those help? Are they allowed after surgery? I'm not yet banded, but curious.

Thanks

Gas X makes a thin strip that you place on your tongue and it dissolves, so you don't have to swallow anything.

I was banded on 8/27 and am not currently having any gas issues, but I am still on all liquids.< /p>

I find that If I gulp Water I get a lot of gas. I try to burp frequently when i drink. Of course this does not work in many places so the gas moves on through. Gas x is a life saver. If you can get it out as a burp you will be much more comfortable later!

Wow, I thought I was the only one with lactose intolerance problems. I used to have a mild lactose intolerance problem before surgery, but since surery (banded 8/29/07) I have a problem with my Protein Shakes, because of the skim milk. I figure taking lactaid with it will cure that problem. But its nice o know I am not alone. Keep it up everyone, we will all reach our goals, and we can then Celebrate with SF cake and ice cream. Just a little...LOL Keep up the great work everyone. Good Luck on your journey.....

I had the band put in on Aug. 13th and I have found I'm able to eat alittle more these days, but I am also getting the gas I just assumed I was eating alittle too much. It feels like anything I put in my stomach that is not liquid gives me that feeling. (no fill yet) LisaG.

Sorry if this is asking TMI but does the gas that you all have and talk about usually expel in burp form or do you pass it the other way a lot too? :embarassed: Just wondering what to expect.

If I can burp it out, it doesn't get too bad on the other end! But generally a little of both

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
