julsfit 133 Posted September 17, 2016 Is it okay to chew gum right after surgery? Sent from my SM-G900V using the BariatricPal App
Bufflehead 6,358 Posted September 17, 2016 My surgeon says no, just because if you accidentally swallowed it, it can be tough on your system (it won't "get lodged in your staple line" though -- gastric sleeve staples are done in a double line and sewn over). But it really doesn't matter what my surgeon says . . . what does yours say? Rules vary a lot, so probably best to check in with your own. Good luck!

Leather'nLace 187 Posted September 17, 2016 I chew it every day. Helps with the late night munchies. It's simple...don't swallow it. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
Pescador 1,374 Posted September 17, 2016 We were warned no gum, candy or mints, and no straws. I can understand the reasoning, that the gum could get stuck if you swallow, like the piece of small soft chicken I choked on and could not breathe. Also I understand the straw causes you to suck in air as you sip.
