Hockey after band

Recommended Posts

Getting my lap band on Oct 4th and wondering how long before I can play ice hockey. Will I be good as new and ready to work hard a week from surgery?

Any experience with sports or working out after the band would be great. Tia!

Hey! I got banded exactly 7 days ago. Today I walked a mile on the treadmill and was literally exhausted and in a bit of pain. Prior to surgery I could do this easily. I'm also just exhausted, so I really doubt playing ice hockey a week after surgery is going to be possible.

Ah man, that's not what I wanted to hear lol thanks for replying :)

How is everything else going, have you lost any weight, staying constantly full? Any issues?

Everything else is going great! I've probably lost 3 lbs since surgery and 19 lbs before surgery. I'm on a 10 day thin liquids and it's been pretty easy to stick with. The only thing is that my hunger pain are killer. I sometimes feel like my stomach wants to eat itself it's so hungry but I can't physically drink anymore Protein shakes. I'm getting used to the hunger pains and I'm sure it will improve once I get my first fill in 3 weeks.

I'd think something as physical as hockey (especially since abdominal muscles are involved) could be 6-8 weeks. You risk hernias after laprascopic surgery.

Hi there, talk to your doctor about length of time before competitive sports, etc. I had five little incisions that needed to heal up. First few days they looked pretty impressive (knife fight!) but they healed quickly and now there is barely a trace. The port gets sewn in and you will want to be careful about that until it is fully healed and then no problem. The hockey will be great for getting the weight off -- all that cardio!

Congratulations @@vaughn! Exciting times. I remember those carton Soups in the health food section of the regular grocery store helped get me by -- potato leek, etc. (made by Pacific, I think). And my surgeon allowed egg drop Soup. I'd think I was really hungry and then have just a bit of something and feel full. Good luck with all! I am very happy with my band and my new life.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
