Post-Op, days in hospital

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery mid-day Tuesday but didn't leave the hospital until mid-day Thursday.

On Wednesday, I could barely keep my eyes open. Also, I could barely take in even sips of liquid without feeling queasy or in pain.

I almost threw up on Wednesday but they rushed and gave me intramuscular medication to stop the process.

Yesterday, I had 2 cups of Water, one cup of Vitamin Water, 2 cups of Tomato Soup and 1 cup of V8.

They said I need to have at least 6 cups of liquid per day.

I can't start the Protein shakes for a couple of days.

Was it this hard or harder for other people??

I think everyone is different.....it's very common to have difficulty getting in all your liquids and Protein in the first week or so due to swelling.........focus on getting in as much Fluid as you can because dehydration will land you back in the hospital very quickly....worry about Protein second.

Keep sipping and try your liquids at different temperatures until you find what works best for you......

It will get easier each day. I promise!!

It is different for everyone, I was in the hospital for about 30 hours total. I was able to sip Water all day long (about a shot glass at a time, every 15 mins.) it took me to day 3 to start Protein Shakes and I alternated between water and Protein shakes. I did get in 50grams of protein on the third day. NOW I am getting in 64 oz of and 70 grams of protein a day and I about 18 days out of surgery. Early on ALL i did was sip sip sip. Good Luck.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
