Gallbladder Removal during VSG

Recommended Posts

Hi all

1st post from me, so be gentle :)

I am booked for my VSG and hernia repair in December and I am interested to know if anyone had their gallbladder removed at the same time as their VSG and was it as simple as just requesting this with your Surgeon........I just don't want to have to go under again and would just prefer the one stop chop approach...........also has anyone in Melbourne been sleeved by Peter Nottle and if so any feedback would be welcomed. Thank you.

If you have no gallstones I would doubt that they would take it on request

I have heard of doctors who will take it out during WLS but most will not. Not everyone develops gallbladder issues after weight loss. Some people even say they are given a medication to try to stop any gallbladder issues from happening after WLS.

I am grateful I had my gallbladder out years ago after losing a measly 40 pounds on Weight Watchers :)

I'm scheduled to be sleeved on September 26, they are also repairing my hietal hernia & removing my gallbladder bladder. I've had several test done as my GB has been causing me pain. ALL the test have come back normal, but my surgeon has agreed to remove it during WLS. I'm on medication for my GB as well. Thete has to be a medical reason to remove it to have insurance pay for it. I'm a self pay Pt. as my insurance doesn't cover VSG.

I had mine out but had gallstones and flare ups for a couple of years. My doctor the morning of surgery searched my chart at the end of my bed to make sure my tests showed the gallstones.

I don't know of any credible doctor who would remove a healthy functioning organ based on just a patients request. If you think you have them get an ultrasound

My surgeon is based in Sydney and said that he didn't want to remove my gallbladder at the same time as the sleeve surgery as it only opens me up to developing complications. I have no gallstones so I'm lucky.

It's common to develop gallbladder issues after weight loss, hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
