1 week out. Not dealing so well.

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am one week out from surgery. I'm having a hard time. It's been 10 days since I had solid food. I am drinking Water, Protein, broths and jello.I didn't prepare for the mental impact of that. I'm thinking about food all the time. I can't go out because the smells make me shake. I have cried the last 2 nights. I ruined yesterday for a tiny corner of brioche. I plotted and planned to do it. I snuck and hid. I didn't reach out for help or give anyone a chance to stop me. I knew that I should not have. It hurt and I won't do it again. I know that this is good for me. I had very bad fibromyalgia. I'm already down 20 lbs and have not had any pain in a few days. This is after having constant all over body pain for over 5 years. I just need help to get through this part. My sister in law said come here.

Hello.

I'm sorry you're not dealing so well. I had the sleeve Aug 9, and I remember the first 2 weeks post op to be the hardest. I felt like Jello and broth were gonna be forever and I would never be able to be a normal person again. So I thought about food all the time. Now I feel normal again and life is too. Don't worry, this too shall pass! Also, based on how you described your story about the brioche, it sounds very familiar to binge eating disorder behavior. Maybe researching B.E.D would help you shed some light on the mental battle you've got going on right now with food. Only reason I say that is because I have struggled with B.E.D for years, but am in recovery now after 5 months of treatment, with the culmination being my surgery. Just something to think about... Good luck. Everything is gonna be okay.

It sounds like you know what you need to do and why. Try to find some activities or meditations to take your mind elsewhere. The first few weeks have so many ups and downs. Reach out to your surgical team, therapist or nutritionist if you are lucky enough to have a center with them all.

I know it sounds corny but I actually used an app for sleep, excercise meditation. It helped calm me for good rest which was key for me healing. You are healing. Your body needs to be cared for. I find it hard sometimes but I am trying to treat myself as I would a loved one I was caring for- with patience, encouragement and good advice!

Also helped me was avoiding tv. I felt like everything was food oriented. Cleaning, going through clothes, walking walking walking. You can do it!

It's great that you have reached out now! Take a deep breath abd be kind to yourself. It's in our nature to make mistakes, everyone days. You've made a mistake but you realise it and are reaching out now.

Try some mindfulness videos on YouTube. They can help stay in the moment. I'm struggling on my preop date, I haven't had carbs in 3 days. I've tried knitting because I'm not very good at it I have to concentrate more on the task.

Good luck xx

You can do it. I relate with what you said about the smells.I feel like my nose is somehow more sensitive since surgery. Do you have an unflavored Protein powder you can mix into your broths and Jello? It might take the edge off some cravings. Just try to focus on your liquid and Protein goals and activities that can distract you. It won't be this way forever and before you know it you'll be eating some real foods again. I believe in you!

I have tried adding protein to Jello but it won't set. I ate it anyway but the chance to chew a little would be great. My girlfriend makes the most wonderful broths. But I am really missing solid.

@@Adellk0405 Your hormones are playing a part in how you are feeling! Just keep reminding yourself of the goal! Try some sugar free popsicles for some crunch. Get some shaved or crushed ice and add crystal light - eat it like a frozen treat! Stay strong - this is only temporary! Look up the book The Emotional First Aid Kit: A Practical Guide to Life after Bariatric Surgery. I got alot of good info from that!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
