Today I did my EGD, the last pre-surgical hurdle. Now the doc is submitting everything to UHC for final approval so I can get my surgery date.

Current Stats:

Height: 5'5"

Weight: 216

A1C: 10

Although I am only a BMI that fluctuates between 35-36 I am so scared of my diabetes and my failures to control it (10 years since initial diagnosis) that I opted for the RNY as It seems to have better outcomes with diabetes.

I am a mother of 4 kids and I want to be around to see them grow up. My husband lost both of his parents to obesity related deaths at young ages (58/65) and it really woke me up about taking a stand.

Anyways, I just wanted to put myself out here as I will be getting more and more involved as I get deeper in this process (possible surgery as early as October)

Thanks for listening!

One of the main reasons why I had RNY gastric bypass surgery was because I had diabetes. I was on two forms of medication and even that wasn't controlling the diabetes and my primary physician wanted me to transition to insulin shots. My mother had diabetes and I helped to care for her. She developed a diabetic ulcer on her foot. With diabetes these wounds simply do not heal. She had it for years and if it was not constantly cared for it, could easily lead to a major infection and a foot amputation. So seeing what she went through, I resolved not to go down the same path.

The interesting thing is how quick you can end diabetes forever. The day I left the hospital, two days after my surgery, I was off all my diabetes medicine. I haven't taken any meds since. I am 3 years post-op and diabetes is still in remission. I test my blood sugar levels periodically and they are fine, actually far better than when I was on my meds prior to surgery. Also gone is my high blood pressure, sleep apnea and GERD.

I have been very happy with my choice of bypass. I was only pre diabetic but that is no longer an issue. My blood pressure is perfect now, along with all my other vitals. My plantar fasciitis in both feet took a few months to disappear, but now it no longer plagues me. Every step used to be agony. That alone was worth it! I'm 55, at my goal weight, and feel better than I did in my 20's.

I have zero regrets and I think you'll be equally pleased with your results! Welcome and best of luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
