Wheelchair

I am currently in a wheelchair from a botched knee surgery. My surgeon changed his requirements and now will not do replacement surgery unless I'm under 40 BMI. Has anyone in a chair had success with sleeve surgery?

@@rainbowsend96 I don't see why you can't be successful. I believe exercise is important but not critical to weight loss with the sleeve. You can look into chair exercises though - just to get your heart rate up. I would talk to your surgeon though - blood clots are a real concern if you're not able to move / walk. They may have to make accommodations for you with perspective to that (as well as the gas after surgery). Best of luck!!!

I agree. The only thing I think that may impact your recovery is blood clots and gas. For many of us, walking was helpful for helping to dissipate the gas after surgery. Talk to your surgeon, he or she may have some ideas of what may help. My guess is that stretching (arms over head) or even laying down and bending may help.

As to the blood clot issue, your surgeon will be aware of what you need to do to avoid blood clots (which you may already be doing now).

I'm a nurse and the risks with immobility are Pulmonary Emboli (clots in the lungs) and Deep Vein Thrombosis (clots in your legs). People in wheelchairs have surgeries everyday. As for clot prevention, drugs such as Enoxaparin (Clexane) and Heparin injections are routinely given to patients pre and post operatively. As for gas dissipation, even sitting up in the wheelchair or in an armchair would assist with this. There must be another reason.
