I have a question.....

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I was banded on August 9th...doing great...just waiting for my much needed first fill on the 11th.

I have a quick question...I have a friend who is going for a consult for the lapband. She told me she is hoping to qualify (with insurance) for the lapband by having acid reflux. Is this possible? I don't know about anyone else, but for me, my doctor said acid reflux could happen as a result of having the lapband. She has a low BMI too (doesn't even look overweight)...she's probably only 25 or so pounds overweight.

Chloe :cry

Hi,

Makes no sense to me either..at ~25# overweight, I can't imagine an insurance company approving it...or her even wanting surgery for that small a change..Funny...it IS the surgery that could give her acid reflux...not cure it!

I'm doing well also, banded on 8/8/07 and awaiting my first fill..no restriction felt with my APS band.

Walter

I don't even think you can get the surgery unless your BMI is at least 35. My doc would do it at 35 if you had a weight related illness; otherwise it was a 40 BMI. I believe it was the same whether it was through insurance or self pay. I was a self pay with a 40BMI.

Good luck to your friend. I think this is a lot to go through for 25 pounds.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
