Approved but can't get surgery date!

Recommended Posts

So I found out over a week ago that my insurance has approved me for either gastric sleeve or bypass. I had told my surgeon before they submitted that I had a specific time frame in mind for this and he said he didn't think that would be a problem. I have called the center several times trying to get this scheduled as I know I have to meet with the anesthesiologist, the nutritionist, etc. When I called his assistant who does the scheduling she told me that I am on a list of patients that he is working to move to another surgeon!!! I just don't understand and am getting frustrated in not moving this forward.

Has anyone else struggled at this stage of the game and if so, how did you solve it?

Yes my doctor moved to another state abs I had to wait for them to hire a new doctor enjoy then had a baby at the end of the month once she was hired. So I was delayed 3 months then got scheduled only to find out I had kidney cancer. 5 months later I was sleeved. Hang in there eveything happens for a reason be patient.

Ironically enough, I got the call today to schedule it. I guess calling a couple times a day works in the end. . October 25th is the day! I am having to switch surgeons though as the one I started with doesn't have time to fit me in before my insurance approval expires. I didn't know that insurance companies have dates ranges for approval. I found that interesting. Anyway, it has been an exciting day and I am both nervous and thrilled to get to this point. Now to schedule all the pre-op stuff. Hopefully they will call me soon to get all that on my calendar as well.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
